Solid start!!

10 years ago, the world was nearly decimated by a Zombie virus, but they managed to get control of it and everything went back to normal. Except now it isn't. The Zombie virus has been accidentally unleashed on an Island and a group of commandos are sent to the island to rescue some scientists that are stranded on it. But not everything is like is seems and this "easy" mission turns out to be something a lot more!!

I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this. It's action packed, fast paced and had enough twists and turns to give you whiplash! It's well written and developed and read like a great action movie. I was kept on the edge of my seat throughout and listened to this as quick as I could. The characters were all well written as well and I pretty much loved all of them. Don't get too attached though because this is a Zombie book after all, so there will be death!!

In all, this is a solid start to what looks like an amazing series. Enjoyable, entertaining and fun, all the while being a horror story too. It was like a movie playing out and I want more!!!

S W Salzman has an awesome voice for horror! He just gets when to add the tension and when to dial it back. He was clear and concise and read it well. He had a variety of tones and voices that was impressive, though his Aussie accent was a little off. It didn't detract from the story though!!

I was voluntarily provided this audiobook for free from the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

Bob @ Platypire Reviews

*I received a comp code for this audio book for an honest review*

Not a dull moment! This book is different in that it doesn't start right before a zombie outbreak, not during, and not immediately. It's further down the road, but while things are still being experimented with and such. There's a lot of politics and money behind the scenes. The only thing I might warn about is the harsh language and crude humor shown by some characters, which honestly made them feel more realistic.

Side note:Did anyone else picture The Smoking Man when Mr. Black was on scene the first couple of times?!

I wasn't sure about the narrator at first, being a bit different from what I've gotten used to, but I warmed up to him quickly. He did voices, accents, and he seemed to actually know the story. I've heard several that it seemed like that it was the reader's first time looking at the book, and that always puts me off. Big points for that not happening here!

Overall: If you like zombies and military action, don't mind blood and guts or an f bomb here and there, I would definitely recommend this!

Zombie story

This was a zombie story that takes place years after the outbreak. The story ebs and flows. I did honestly enjoy the ending both in how the story ends and that it actually wrapped up. I received this audiobook for free for an honest review.

Action packed

What did you love best about Dead Island: Operation Zulu?

When the surviving team was at Mr. Blacks house

What about S W Salzman’s performance did you like?

S.W. Salzman doesn't use a dead-pan voice as most narrators I have heard do. He keeps your attention focused on the story and the characters.

Good start to a series

Any additional comments?

3.5 stars

Good start to a series. Overall a fun, entertaining and enjoyable listen. Even though you know how this is basically going to play out, it doesn't make the story any less intense, suspenseful or engaging. It plays out like a movie. You can see it in your head as the story is being told. It pulls you in quickly and holds your attention until the end.

Loved the chapter titles. The title of each chapter made sense and gave a little hint as to what was about to happen.

It's fast-paced and full of non-stop action. How else could a story be when you are trying to fight your way off an island full of zombies.

While there are a handful of characters that stand out immediately, the cast of characters is so large that many of them are not really well developed especially in the first half of the story. As the bodies start to fall and more time is spent with the survivors their characters become better developed. You can't help but root for the Commando's and mourn their losses right along with them. By the time it's over your ready to join the team and fight right along beside those who are left.

S.W. Salzman did a great job with the narration. He has a gruff edge to his voice that fit the story and characters perfectly. You wouldn't want your hard as nails commandos sounding like wimps. Clearly spoken with a nice pace. Good character voices. Some of his characters voices were fantastic. The accents, cadence and tone were great. His female voices were good as well. His voice pulled you into the story and made you feel like you were right there in the middle of it all. Very enjoyable.

Fun breath of fresh air for zombie genre

I got plenty of laughs from Dead Island: Operation Zulu. Author Allen Gamboa displays a shining talent for writing characters so lifelike they could be standing right beside me, carrying on a conversation. The story begins with a group of Aussie and American ex-military hired to travel to an island for what they believe will be a simple rescue mission for survivors and retrieval of a new zombie virus antitode. Unbeknownst to the group, a crew of Russian ex-military unfriendlies had already reached the island with the same MO. The two crews battle the undead and one another, each group trying to escape the island alive with the scientist and his antidote. Who hired these crews, and why? A blindsiding twist tops off this humor-filled zombie/military/action novel that I'm so glad I took a chance on.

Overall, a really fun read! Top-notch narration by S. W. Salzman elevated Gamboa's realistic characters to even greater heights. Even if you're at saturation with all-things-zombie, do check this one out, as it's a much-needed fresh breath for the genre.

I was provided a free copy of this audiobook by the narrator in exchange for my unbiased review. Many thanks to the narrator for this opportunity!

A decent zombie book

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

So, I am a huge fan of the zombie genre. This one is pretty solid, over all, but there are so many characters it can be a bit difficult to keep up with them all. For me, the biggest impact this had was on character development. I felt like there just wasn't enough time spent on any group of characters for me to care that much about. That's not saying the story was bad or the writing wasn't good. The book was pretty entertaining and the narrator was good, it just make me care.

"Black blood and grey brain matter."

Any additional comments?

They were told it would be a cakewalk: fly into a small tropical island and extract a doctor and the vaccine he'd developed. They were not happy when they learned that there could be zombies. But the team sent by Strategic Securities could not have guessed just how bad it would be. Zombies yes, hundreds of them. But also another rival team Russians, looking for the same research development and they were determined to get there first. Not a cakewalk then, a bloodbath.

This is an unusual take on the zombie apocalypse genre, well written with believable characters and authentic sounding dialogue for hardened combatants in a danger situation. Each chapter is short and given a snappy title. The story, full of fierce fighting bursts, is filled with visceral violence and graphic pictures. The narrator's text reading is well paced, his voice slightly gravelly as if filled with the dust and debris of the confrontations and his rendering of the speech of each individual protagonist is individual and skilful, encompassing American, Aussie and Russian accents of both male and female. My only dislike of Mr.Salzman's performance was that in longer sections of text, his voice intonation became too downbeat, hard to sustain full concentration. But this was occasional.

Altogether an exciting thriller with very high death rates this is a real treat for all zombie and military action readers alike. My thanks to the rights holder of Dead Island who freely gifted me a copy lot this book, via audio book Boom. Recommended but only if you are prepared for some crude innuendoes and plenty of blood and gore .
