Publisher's summary

Tom Thrush thinks basic officer training is tough - until he joins the frigate Kestrel and finds out what tough really means. The crew resents him. The first officer is actively hostile. As the ship hunts pirates in deep space, Tom struggles to fit in and wonders if things can get any worse. They can.

A devastating attack leaves the ship crippled with half the crew dead or dying. The senior officers are wiped out, leaving a terrified sublieutenant in the last place he wants to be.

In command.

Enjoyable

Enjoyable, a little slow in beginning, but picks up and grips you to the characters.

Great story !!

Really good story with great character development !! I really enjoyed book one and am looking forward to book two ! Only problem I had was with the narrator’s volume when the main character is thinking . It gets a little low where you need to turn the volume up or miss his “thoughts “. Overall though, it’s a great listen !!!

Love the writing, very relatable

Great listen or read. Highly Would recommend to anyone, especially to sci-fi fans. Great job, not too fast or too slow. Engaging.

Best sci-fi yet

Great story. Super great narrator. One of the best I've heard so far.

Onward to book 2

Good

A bit slow at first while establishing characters then it picks up. The battle matures the mixed crew and the story accelerates to its end. An enjoyable book.

A fun sci-fi series with a strong lead

Tom Thrush is a likeable troublemaker who is thrust into an interplanetary war before his training is even finished.

Through a combination of talent and grit he manages to survive and make a significant difference, only to end up disappointing his command oversight.

I enjoy all the books in the series, but felt "Prison Planet" and "Black Destroyer" were weaker episodes. In particular, Black Destroyer seemed to repeat some of the experiences Tom had already been through and lacked some of the novelty and narrative drive of the previous books.

Overall good book

Basically a good story, but I have NEVER seen a published book with such overuse of a word. To manage using "Aft" twice just several words apart (though separate sentences), was not a complete surprise, but perhaps overachieving in the overuse category.
If it was not necessary to constantly adjust the volume because the narrator drops his voice so low when the main character is thinking, the book would have been far less frustrating with constantly needing to rewind, turn up volume, then be prepared to turn down quickly when voice was at normal level again.
