okay writing, distractingly bad voice work

The story was interesting. A multi part story, told from multiple viewpoints, with a lot of scandalous plot twists. The hypocrisy & abuse of power within the Catholic Church was a major theme. This is Selena Kitt, so there are, of course, older man/younger woman couplings, some kinky religious stuff, a touch of bondage, some non-hetero sex acts (although it is mostly hetero), and incest. There were also several contemporary references to bring the reader in to the 50s setting, without it hitting you over the head.

The plot was interesting, although the last book did slog along a bit (not uncommon for series endings though). I kept going because I wanted to know what would happen with the love interests, but also with the church scandal. Unfortunately, the scandal didn't wrap up in a satisfying way, & there were some plot holes in the conclusion that didn't match up with earlier details. But the romances were generally served well. And I loved Erica's confidence & sexual agency, especially when she teaches her partner(s) about sex and about what she likes.

There was a lack of thorough copyediting, which is fairly common in a lot of this kind of erotica (such as malaprops & use of an unrelated but similarly spelled word), but it was only enough to be distracting in a couple spots. Also I suspect the author hasn't lived in the States, because there are definitely some turns of phrase that stuck out to me as odd. I don't believe they were ever used in the USA, even 60 years ago (one example: dodgem cars, ie bumper cars).

I think this narrator has done a lot of Selena Kitt's stories, and I hadn't minded her much for those. but they're all around 20-45 minutes long and really don't have much narration or dialogue that isn't directly related to sex stuff. This collection, however, involved much more, and more realistic, dialogue, inner monologue, and description/plot. The narrator has a really terrible grasp of diction, cadence, and vocabulary. Many mispronounced words, awkward pauses in the middle of a clause, and utterly confusing tonal shifts. It's hard to describe exactly what it comes together as, but altogether, it's.... not good.

(I want to note that this recording was done several years ago. I'm not really aware of this voice actor's other/more recent work, but it's of course possible she has improved a lot since this production. So I don't want to say that she's bad overall. But her performance here left a lot to be desired.)

very erotic

this book will get your blood moving
BEWARE THOUGH.....if you're a devout catholic you likely WILL NOT appreciate this story as well as if you have strong moral convictions regarding much older role models not being intimate with a younger person under their influence. if those points aren't an issue read and enjoy I sure did!!!!

Awesome

I decided to return this book a few pages in because I thought it was another boring explicitly sexual piece of trash. So glad I couldn’t return the book because after a few more chapters I was wowed. What a tale, it keeps you guessing and just when you think you have it figured out you are hit another surprise. Described in one word- enthralling,

holly Hackett is a terrible narrator.

holly Hackett is a terrible narrator. she mispronounced words. she pauses in the middle of sentences like she's turning a page. she puts emphasis on the wrong words in a sentence. at times she forgets to change her voice to match the person speaking.

Sexy but inconsistent

The content of the book is pretty solid. It's definitely sexy in a taboo kind of way. The author knows how to lay out a narrative. The dialogue was silly at times. The third book started to get way too convoluted. Everyone was adopted but related, everyone had the hots for everyone else, everyone was involved with secret nefarious things... Sex cults, porno, nazis, stolen babies. It was just a lot going on. The courtroom scene was like that scene from the Meryl Streep movie... "A dingo ate my baby!" I'm like, say "baby" one more time, Leah.

As for the narrator... Girl... You have a lovely voice. Your talent is there. But the mispronounciations were egregious. Stupid easy middle school level words were mispronounced. It was annoying and distracting. I can only hope the author had no control over the audio production. If this were my book and the narrator mispronounced every 12th word or so, I'd be flipping a table.

Narrator needs some work

The most annoying thing about this book was all the mispronounced words. From chagrin to Barre (seriously, who things it's supposed to be pronounced barry?) Every time the narrator got to a word she obviously didn't know and completely butchered the pronunciation it pulled me out of the story. Good story, awful narrator.

Yuck! What a horrid, misbegotten slog...

So, when I’ve read other works by this author, I’ve come to expect a deft, well-written (if light) piece of delicious kinky-ness. Moreover, I can appreciate the desire of a genre author such as Ms. Kitt to expand her range; perhaps to tackle some of the weighty issues of the day - child sex abuse, pornography, religious indoctrination, patriarchy and misogyny in 1950s American Culture, the abuses in the foster care system, separation of church and state, etc. Bravo, say I. Such travesties need to be exposed. You go, Ms. Kitt!

Yet this ungainly beast is neither fish nor fowl; it has a few passages of yummy Kitt erotica, but grossly muddies the waters with a heavy handed morality tale about the evils of the 1950s Catholic Church and society in general. The story is sloppy, oversimplified, and often times ignorant of medical, legal and governmental conventions. Even worse, the relationships between the characters are sophomoric and grossly saccharine-and often just gross. One winds up hating everyone.

In short, this just isn’t a very good story. Mix in the (far too) occasional hot sex scenes (which, let’s face it, is why 98% of us would ever read anything by Ms. Kitt), and you get a weird melodrama of moralistic slop that briefly raises the libido, only to then snuff it out thoroughly and completely. If Ms. Kitt’s goal was to salute her horny readership with a massive middle finger and a loud “F.U.”!, then well done! You’re right, Ms. Kitt. We’re all pervs who ought not be reading this crap.

Now how can we make this butt-puppy worse? Simply stated, by adding this narrator. Some other reviewers have chided dear Holly for her mispronunciations. Not me. I applaud the producers for hiring a poor soul who clearly finished her formal education at the eighth grade. What IS stomach churning about the narration to me is the sheer stupidity in which Holly casts the two lead characters. Rather than sexually precocious Lolitas, the sing-song narration makes the two lead characters sound simpering and, well, stupid. Not ingenue innocent — just dumb. It isn’t remotely sexy. It’s just irritating.

Sorry to say this, but the combination of really bad story and even worse narration make this selection nearly unlistenable. Best find something—anything—else. F you can find an old phone book, it would make for better and potentially more arousing reading.

WRONG ON SO MANY LEVELS!

I couldn't even finish this book. It is just wrong and sinful on so many levels.
First: If you prefer books with strong minded female lead characters, (like myself) this book is definitely not for you!
Erica and Leah are just so weak and gullible it is annoying!
Second: The church OMG This church is filled with sick perverted man!!!
Its just sick what they do to the girls all in the name of God!
This book makes me think that catholic church is truly the must corrupt church there is!
This Book is seriously disturbing!
