Publisher's summary

1356 A.D. - It is warring times for England as the Black Prince sweeps his way through France, waging nasty warfare on the population. Masterminding this brutal strategy is the knight they call the Black Angel. Brandt de Russe, Duke of Exeter, is the brains behind the prince’s war machine, a mountain of a man who is as cunning as he is frightening. In battle, no man is his equal.

The Lady Ellowyn de Nerra, granddaughter of the great mercenary Braxton de Nerra, has been sent to London by her crippled father to collect the men he has donated to the Black Prince’s wars in France. De Nerra men are mingled with the Duke of Exeter’s men and Ellowyn is at the dock when the duke disembarks his ships. In her attempt to introduce herself to Brandt and explain her purpose, the duke has little time for the beautiful young woman and mistakes her for a whore. Grossly insulted, Ellowyn threatens the man that all sane men fear.

And so begins the fiery, passionate, and deep love story that transcends families, kings, and two continents, building to the Battle of Poitiers where Brandt is on the front lines. In battle, no man is his equal but even the most powerful of men are prisoners of their own hearts.

review of lord of war: black angel

Would you listen to Lord of War again? Why?

I love audiobooks especially this one and have all of Kathryn's ebooks which I have read numerous times now to have this book in a different format is just all the more the best! Even though it took me a while to like the narrator's voice and I couldn't really imagine it as Brandt's voice. His voice I felt was perfect for Ellowyn's. As the book progressed I did start to like it anyway and I will definitely listen to it again!

What did you like best about this story?

Yes, I do have a soft spot for the romance but the battles and action which I rather enjoyed are just so descriptive and it really feels like I am actually there and so real! Brandt the hero is just a wonderful guy tough by nature but really deep down has a heart of gold and Ellowyn the heroine isn't afraid to stand up too anyone even the black angel Brandt who all men fear? Both characters are just amazing!

Which scene was your favorite?

The first scene when Brandt and Ellowyn meet and he tells her to "be gone wench" Ellowyn's reaction to being brutally rebuffed had me giggling and laughing.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I just loved the whole book and Ms. Le Veque can surely bring almost every emotion into play one moment I'm laughing the next I'm crying. As I stated above laughing at Brandt's and Ellowyn's first meeting. Then I was crying when Dylan was killed in the battle of Poitiers. I just loved his character so much and didn't want this too happen. Poor Alex and Annabeth!!! I am amazed how she is able to spin such a wonderful tale of love, loss but a happy ending as well!!!

Any additional comments?

I would have to say even though there is no explicit sex scenes described in detail which I am most grateful for. Plus, the book doesn't lose it's intensity despite not having any sex described in graphic detail the love that Brandt and Ellowyn speaks volumes without it. There is still a hidden implication of their joining and you could kind of surmise it happening which is fine by me but I wouldn't recommend the book for anyone younger than 14 years old. I don't know if I would want a 11 or 10 year old listening to it despite how grown up they are.

I'm going to give it another try...

I was just about to return this book because I cannot stand to listen to the narrator any longer. I'm about 45 minutes into the book. However, after reading all the reviews about what a fabulous story it is, I'm going to give it another shot and try to get past the narrator to enjoy the story. He definitely goes on my list of narrators to avoid - the voice is so breathy that it is terribly distracting.

Emotionally powerful! I strongly recommend it!

Where does Lord of War rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I love audiobooks, so when Kathryn Le Veque decided to offer her books as audios, I was very pleased because I am a huge fan of her stories. I will probably get more because I listen to them while I create some jewelry or just to relax. Lord of War, Black Angel is one of my favorites.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Lord of War?

There are so many beautiful scenes, I find it hard to choose.

What about Daniel Dorse’s performance did you like?

I liked his voice!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, I prefer to savor each chapters slowly.

Any additional comments?

My review for Lord of War, Black Angel, posted on Amazon.com.
Emotionally powerful! 7 stars
When I read, I seldom cry! But Kathryn Le Veque’s Medieval Lord of War, Black Angel is so passionate that I shed some tears and had a lump in the throat! It’s a beautiful novel, breathtaking and emotionally rich with her characters Brandt de Russe and Lady Ellowyn de Nerra. I loved the sensual chemistry between her main characters. It’s the story of two major families in the warring times of England! Ellowyn, daughter of mercenary Braxton de Nerra, is sent by him, to collect men from a legendary warrior Brandt de Russe, Duke of Exeter, the Black Angel. As soon as they meet, they had gotten to a very bad start. I loved her heroine; she was a feisty woman, head-strong, intelligent and always got what she wanted. Brandt is a powerful warrior but also a generous man with a tender heart! Both their worlds were so different, her being overprotected by her parents and him trying to survive at war! I loved that touch of humor between them, he liked to tease her and getting her all feisty. Sparks starts to flare between the two and passion ignites! Brandt suddenly, felt a strong attraction to Ellowyn, who then stopped seeing him as her enemy but rather as a very attractive man. Their love relationship was so well developed. Being often on the front lines at war, he felt that he needed to protect her at all cost. As war goes on, their love became stronger! Emotional events will occur, that will make you shed tears! You have to read this novel to understand the chemistry between Brandt and Ellowyn. Ms. Le Veque is a high quality writer that pulled me into her medieval story and again, I had to keep on reading to know what would happen next. She is a very descriptive author, so much I could see the surroundings on the battlefield! It’s a captivating story filled with strong emotions, tenderness, passion and adventure. It was the perfect medieval romance for me! I am literally addicted to Kathryn Le Veque’s stories. I highly recommend this sublime novel!

A VERY ENJOYABLE EMOTIONAL MEDIEVAL MELODRAMA

When a gifted author can transport you from majestic Castles in Medieval England to the muddy battlefields of France and intertwines and richly describes Knights, great secondary characters, gory frontline battles, humor, heartbreak and a passionate deep love story, then you have no option but to be totally transfixed and captivated until the bitter-sweet end.

As the Prince's right hand man, Brandt de Russe (Duke of Exeter) is known and feared as the Black Angel Of Death and has a reputation, which is rightly deserved, for being a clever and cold blooded killer….. that is until he's accosted at the Docks by a very angry woman. Lady Ellowyn is feisty, headstrong and fearless but she has to be as she's been put in charge of her Father's men who are currently under Brandt's command having just returned from France and he is seeking new warriors to enable him to return to the war. As the action-packed story slowly unfolds and obstacles are overcome, the H/H learn to trust and support each other and it's not long before their touching, tender romance deepens. But Ellowyn is a 'Seer' and has nightmares which progress and details get added to throughout the story which culminates in tragedy, heartache and a desperate struggle for life.

The narration was off-putting at the start but once you get immersed in the story it's no longer an issue.

Worth a credit? This is Book 1 of the De Russe Legacy series and I can't wait for book 2…. so YES creditworthy.

Story great, narration poorly lacking

I listened to this book because that story was enjoyable and thrilling. The narrator was boring and difficult to bear. No emotion just a monologue of words. Truly horrendous.

Cut the end of your book off much?

Sorry just did not care for this book at all. First, what was with the narrator's whispery voice. He actually would not have been bad if he used his regular voice. Hated narration with that voice. Heroine was not at all likeable, spoiled brat with no redeemable traits. Hero okay but really, a "Warlord" led around by a spoiled brat. Really struggled to get through first half of book, it picked up in second half then just ended. Just like that. Will not be reading or listening to anymore in series.

Narrator was a poor choice.

Would you listen to Lord of War again? Why?

I've been plowing through Kathryn LeVeque's books since I discovered her. Part of the reason was the great voices of the narrators. But this one had me fighting sleep, because he spoke so slowly. I thought he was fighting sleep himself! I stayed with it, however, because I wanted to see what happened.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Daniel Dorse?

Probably not.
