Publisher's summary

AD 1139 - When her husband perishes in a skirmish, the Lady Cantia du Bexley Penden is distraught. Her husband was assisting the mighty Viscount Winterton in the battle for the throne between Empress Matilda and Stephen of Blois, caught, like most men, in a vicious struggle for the rightful ruler of England.

Tevin du Reims is Viscount Winterton, a man with a heavy burden to bear and a dreadful secret. A lonely man whose wife left him years ago with a sickly child to raise, he is drawn to the sorrowful Lady Penden and in comforting her, falls in love with her. With her husband so recently killed, Cantia cannot resist the solace offered by the handsome viscount.

A fiery passion is borne from grief and loneliness, and soon Tevin and Cantia find themselves in the grip of a powerful romance. But forces are at work against them; Cantia's father-in-law, driven to madness by the death of his son, plots Cantia's demise, blaming her for his son's death. Complicating the issue is Tevin's cousin, the lecherous Earl of East Anglia, who sets his sights on Cantia as a conquest. In order to protect Cantia, Tevin secretly whisks her from Rochester Castle with the intention of sending her someplace safe. But his altruistic plans come to ruin when Cantia is abducted by outlaws.

And so begins the journey. Come along on the adventure of Tevin and Cantia, following them through death and life, through sorrow and hope. It is a tale of a lifetime involving two people with utterly shattered lives who must save each other and restore hope during the dark times of early Medieval England, during a turbulent time when men openly said Christ and his angels slept....

Great, affirming story, great narrator.

Another satisfying romance from Le Veque. I've only listened to 2 or 3 narrators of her novels, but this one is one of my favorites. He didn't overplay it, which I find can increase the suspense of the storyline. Subtlety can be everything in an audible novel.

voice Speed too slow

I love the narrator Kevin Acher.
Yet to enjoy this book ,I had to increase the voice speed to 1.25.
Additionally, there were repeating sentences, which, I have not encountered before.

I still enjoyed this audible book!

Kind Regards-

Great medieval story, fantastic narration

4.5/5 The narrator's voice pulled me in with the sample. I wasn't disappointed. A fast-paced, interesting medieval full of angst and steam. A Everything I've come to expect from Kathryn Le Veque. Lady Cantia is a widow who thought she knew love. Until the touch of Viscount Winterton, her liege lord, shows her what true passion is. The secondary characters were fleshed out and now I'm off to find stories on some of my favorites.
This is the first time I've heard this narrator. Kevin Archer added another layer to the story, bringing the characters and setting to life. I can't wait to listen to more by him.

Great story!

I do love all of Kathryn Le Veque's books! This one is no exception. I have to say, I feel bad. I don't particularly like the voice. It was for the lack of a better word too soft, almost like he was whispering. The tempo of the narration was a bit slow. When I tried to adjust the speed, it was too fast. Don't let this keep you from listening to it however!! After a few chapters I was able to focus on the story.

love this book too, as well as all K. LV

I just found KLV books and absolutely love the good, sound midevil vibe. This story is very gentle and caring about widowhood, and not holding on to grief pay the point of losing new happiness.

Engaging Tale

Very enjoyable. Excellent characters, well paced, interesting storyline. The marathon was also good. I did like it and recommend it but can only give it a 3.75 as it didn’t meet my high criteria of a 4 or the rare 5 I bestow on the best books. Though good, it lacked a vital spark in my estimation. That said there were some moments that were deeply touching. A good read!

New narrator!

I enjoyed this story. While it still had the violence that is typical of Kathryns books it wasn’t bad. The narrator was very good and I hope he will narrate more of her books.
