Based on 20 years of investigative reporting and interviews with 100 practicing physicians who embrace the keto lifetstyle as the best prescription for their patients' health, Taubes' book puts the ketogenic diet movement in the necessary historical and scientific perspective. It makes clear the vital misconceptions in how we've come to think about obesity and diet (no, people do not become fat simply because they eat too much; hormones play the critical role) and uses the collected clinical experience of the medical community to provide essential practical advice.

For decades, Americans have cut back on red meat and dairy products full of "bad" saturated fats. We obediently complied with nutritional guidelines to eat "heart healthy" fats found in olive oil, fish, and nuts, and followed a Mediterranean diet heavy on fruits, vegetables, and grains. Yet the nation's health has declined. What is going on?

While researching the toxic and addictive properties of sugar for Fat Chance, Robert Lustig made an alarming discovery - our pursuit of happiness is being subverted by a culture of addiction and depression from which we may never recover. Dopamine is the "reward" neurotransmitter that tells our brains we want more; yet every substance or behavior that releases dopamine in the extreme leads to addiction. Serotonin is the "contentment" neurotransmitter that tells our brains we don't need any more; yet its deficiency leads to depression.

In the late 1970s when the government mandated we get the fat out of our food, the food industry responded by pouring more sugar in. The result has been a perfect storm, disastrously altering our biochemistry and driving our eating habits out of our control. To help us lose weight and recover our health, Robert Lustig presents personal strategies to readjust the key hormones that regulate hunger, reward, and stress; and societal strategies to improve the health of the next generation.

Story
Among Americans, diabetes is more prevalent today than ever. Obesity is at epidemic proportions; nearly 10% of children are thought to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. And sugar is at the root of these, and other, critical, society-wide, health-related problems. With his signature command of both science and straight talk, Gary Taubes delves into Americans' history with sugar: its uses as a preservative, as an additive in cigarettes, the contemporary overuse of high-fructose corn syrup.

We all know the dangers of sugar and salt: but the danger attributed to the second white crystal has more to do with getting too little of it, not too much. Too little salt can shift the body into semi-starvation mode, causing insulin resistance, and may even cause twice as much fat to be absorbed for every gram that's consumed. Too little salt in certain populations can also actually increase blood pressure as well as resting heart rate.

A 20 hour therapy session.
Let me start by saying that I agree with almost everyone Dr. Tim Noakes and his co author Marika Sboros have to say about nutrition science and the real culprit of the diseases of civilization that have cropped up during this century. And yes, I agree Noakes was a victim here but he never lets you forget it. It's not quite whining, but it's close and the defensiveness in the book blunts the main message he has which again, I think is correct. In the end, I liked the story, liked the book, but didn't like the person.

A treatise on what's wrong with modern medicine
Professor Noakes will go down in history as a hero. What an ordeal. Every physician or dietitian who has ever parroted the low-fat, low-calorie, high-carbohydrate message to patients in the belief it's best for health should be required to read this book, or at least watch the videos of testimony provided at this trial (which can be found online). It's like a master class on human metabolism.
This book is not an easy read; it's dense, but for good reason. The narrators don't always get the pronunciations right; forr example, the male narrator mispronounced "remuneration" ("mun-" from the Latin word for money) as "renumeration" several times. But the quality of narration otherwise was very good.

Scientific truth prevails. Insulin resistance solution.
Highly Inspiring and enlightening story of a courageous scientist who dared to change his mind based on the newly discovered evidence, was witch-hunted and emerged victorious! Thanks to people like Tim our world has hope! So much research is not done or hidden because of the financial interests. So many brilliant people are prosecuted for their success if financial interests are in stake. Yet Dr Noakes and Tim’s Angels exist!!! My heart is singing!
The book is chock full of science and rabbit holes to pursue.
Many of the facts, experts and references are very familiar to me thanks to my 20 years of nutrition studies. Some of the references mentioned in the book are on my “must read” list for the nutritionist I mentor.
I am going to dig through the names and studies mentioned and I am sure that it will make my health coaching even more solid.

Chapter 17 & 18 are an absolute MUST-LISTEN!
If you need to be convinced about a LCHF or Keto lifestyle then this is a must listen. The evidence is absolutely overwhelming and proved in court. The whole book is a great listen but for anyone who's short of time or patience I would highly recommend listening to chapter 17 & 18 first, These chapters can stand on their own. Totally amazing. I can't wait for Tim Noakes to publish more detailed evidence. It's about time the rest of the wold wakes up. When you're done with this book go and listen to The Carnivore Code by Paul Saladino MD before you eat any more plants. Listen carefully because this is powerful stuff. A must read for anyone interested in the truth
Tim tells us that ‘science is never settled’ but his natural inquisitiveness got him into serious trouble. Professor Tim Noakes is one of the worlds greatest researchers and his willingness to admit his prior mistakes and process new information leaves other scientists in the dust shackled to their biases. This kind of openness should advance science and prevent stagnation within the field of nutrition but sadly it was met with egocentric derision and ultimately a legal ambush. Fortunately, common sense prevailed after a thorough examination of the literature. The Dietetics association of SA and their stooges should hang their heads in shame, how dare they prevent the advances that the world so desperately needs to protect their sponsors and other vested industries? This is a must read for those looking to understand the truth behind the crippling of nutrition science and the people’s health by vested interests that are happy wallowing within the status quo while they sell us their palliative drugs with horrible side effects. Thank God for Tim Noakes and journalist, Marika Sboros, who had the will to stand up to these Goliath bullies.

..... combined with cutting edge science and tons of common sense. What a fantastic book! Reading often like a fast-paced thriller, this true story of a modern-day David and Goliath struggle set in early 21st Century South Africa is a fascinating read, and the Audible version is extremely well produced and narrated. I loved this book and rate it as one of my top reads ever.

Brilliant
This book shows how the denial of the low carb benefits by the food industry and their minions in the so called health professions will never be able to trump the real science. It is only a matter of time before the people of the world will see this complete failure of those deniers to help us to be healthier people. The industries that are making us addicted to their garbage food will suffer in the end instead of the people.
Prof Noakes suffered greatly because evil people had a beef with him exposing the truth of their failings to truly help the people of South Africa and the world through proper human nutrition.
