The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Publisher's Summary
Apprentice mage Chance Fortunato has faced off with a lot of nasty things. Power-hungry vampires, abusive alpha werewolves, and deranged cultists. But none of his training under his mentor Dr. Corwin has prepared him for the trial he is about to face: Junior Prom.
While investigating an occult group, Chance discovers something truly sinister: An event known as the Rending will fall on the night of prom, and every circle of demon-worshippers in New Essex is looking for one girl: the half-caste Chylde. Some want to capture her, others want to kill her, for her blood is the key to controlling Mammon’s horde and collecting on the true purpose of the Rending: to break a demonic contract without giving up what was bargained for or losing one’s soul. As if things weren’t bad enough, Chance learns that if the horde is not controlled by the blood of the half-caste Chylde, it will break free to fulfill a plan of its own, to slaughter 100 innocents as a sacrifice to release Mammon, the original ruler of Hell.
Caught between two terrible choices, Chance’s job is made all the more difficult as the past begins to catch up to his mentor and himself. Old debts come due, forgotten wounds are reopened, and alliances shift in unexpected directions as Chance fights to save both his classmates and the half-caste Chylde, whoever she is. With the truth closer than he realizes, can Chance do the impossible, save the day and survive taking up the mantle of Prom Knight?

WHAT A BUNCH OF GARBAGE
This author is most certainly one of the weakest and most handicapped writers in the fantasy genre. Reeder should throw away his pen and keyboard or trade them in for broom and cleaning rag. He would make a better janitor than a wannabe writer. His characters are contradictory too themselves, and his scenarios he places them in aswell as the actions he makes them undertake are so ridiculous and so implausible. This series makes me wanna vomit its so bad!

I don't know what it was about this one...
I loved the previous books in the series. It did make sense as a continuation from the previous books, but I really struggled to get through this one. Not sure if it was the story or the narrator's portrayal of it (although this is the same one from the last books and it wasn't an issue) but it just wasn't gripping like the books prior in the series.

Pretty good for the most part...
I like this series. I like how the author uses the time to tell the story. Not a lot of filler time imo. I like the dark edge and how he touches on things of a serious or mature nature tastefully, Only thing that really annoys me is that the character development seems inconsistent at times. The MC falls for stuff he shouldn't, loses fights he wouldn't and gets caught in scenarios he should be prepared for. His experience and skills are contradicting the arcs at times, I normally just accept that as minor story telling inconveniences or quirks but this is a consistent issue. He really should be a badass in fights and he comes across as ok... mildly adequate. There are a few other issues I have such as how the MC trauma is handled but overall I like the MC and the story. The MC girlfriend is being kinda ridiculous in this particular book and thats inconsistent from he usual but again thats minor. I definitely recommend the series overall. Especially for free.

On a downward slide
This book wasn't bad, but it didn't have what the last few books had. It didn't have the harry potter style humor of the school he went to, a structure that really holds up the YA style of book. It didn't have the humor of his evaluator watching him and being from a completely different culture.
Overall the story wasn't bad, it just really didn't pull me in like the last few. I'll probably check out the next book in the line, but I may be calling this off soon.
Just OK.
