Apprentice mage Chance Fortunato just can’t catch a break. His training has gotten even harder, and his mentor, Dr. Corwin, is pushing him to take his mage trials early. Still, it beats his old gig working for a demon. But life takes a turn for the worse when a member of his girlfriend Shade’s werewolf pack is killed by a member of a rogue pack. Adding insult to grief, the pack is forced to let the Conclave send an observer to monitor their investigation.

When the Conclave allows Jacob Kain, an alpha from the Boston clans, to act in their stead, though, things become even more complicated, as Kain has an agenda of his own. As Chance and Shade fight to keep Kain from taking over, a new enemy arrives with a very personal connection to Chance. Even if he can survive this deadly combination of forces, can he survive the plans of another, hidden enemy from his past? The only thing that is certain that before it’s all over, everyone’s true colors will show.

Love this magical series!! This book, however, didn't need to happen. Pretty weird way to climax such epic battles and drama from the previous stories. But...still a great series!!

great series!

As you can see from some of the lower reviews there's a fair amount of misogyny and unnecessary violence. However, our main characters stay true to themselves and don't condone it. The only times it's not rebuked is when it's spoken and not directed. Chance chooses his battles and he would defend someone if there was someone to defend. It's presence and abundance in the book does make it a lot harder to get through the previous ones. Though it's not a surprise. Every time we involve wolves outside of New Essex they're all super serious misogynist demanding respect they haven't earned. So it's a rough read and if it's going to be triggering don't read it, if you can though I'd say it's worth the listen.

A bit rough

If you can push past the first half of the book, which is really rough with the Alpha Male posturing, the rest is a wonderful read/listen. The rage and anxiety inducing beginning is set to counter the last half, which creates a stronger contrast.

Also, sticking with it really shows that though there are times Chance believes some of the nonsense at some points, the author does not. There are still some things that feel unresolved, but are likely to be dealt with in an upcoming sequel. I will stick around for it and wait for it eagerly.

A lot better than the reviews said

I love this series, but this story was very hard to get through in the middle, it just turned into abusing favorite chars that are already trying to get past abuse. I had to skip about 2 chapters in the middle to get through it. I like where the last 2 hours or so took the ending and I look forward to the next one but this book is the low point in the series so far for me.

A story that was an emotional roller coster

This was a great story, but I did have a problem with the protagonist paralyzing someone who tried to kill his family.

The performance was great.
