Publisher's summary

The first novel in J. David Baxter's epic portal fantasy series, the Greymantle Chronicles.

College student Nate Keller is transported to another world where he becomes the target of deadly zealots who serve powerful malevolent gods. He will need to overcome his fears, make allies, and learn new skills to stop a plot that could plunge an entire world into war.

Portal Fantasy:

An epic fantasy series seen through the lens of a modern college student from Earth, plunged into an adventure on a high magic fantasy world. Forced to adapt and survive, he will need to dodge the mages and soldiers of a nation dedicated to the service of evil gods, while trying to uncover the mystery of how and why he was kidnapped to this world.

What makes it Unique: The Setting

Strong, detailed worldbuilding: Set in a unique world of swords and magic, Greymantle goes beyond the concept of "high magic" fantasy world. Fantasy in flavor, but more advanced than modern Earth in some respects. Greymantle is a world in which technology and science never existed, yet cities are cleaner, banking is done with the magical bank tokens, floating carts are used to haul freight, and magic is a science in its own right.

Great Epic Portal Fantasy

Character driven Epic portal fantasy. I love stories about people from Earth going to a fantasy world and having adventures. Add a little mystery of why it happened and bad guys hunting the hero, and you've got a great story. Slow burn - MC starts out weak and gets stronger, Classic heroes journey.

Refreshingly well written portal fantasy

I really enjoyed this book.
Modern man ends up in fantasy world n leverages knowledge from a more advanced civilization to great advantage
...it's been done before ...n it's been done a lot
But man I really like the pacing on this one.
It's like a litrpg/progression fantasy type story ...but written to be more "realistic" ...no, not quite right ..."mature" ...closer, but no. I mean, the MC went thru the whole 1st book without learning any magic, and I enjoyed it. Most books in this genre like to rush past the whole shock of being in a new world, the adjustment period, n they want to hurry up n get to the battle magic ...n for the most part they r right to do so, cuz unless u r an excellent storyteller that can be pretty boring material ...but this guy managed to make it interesting. Now I'm really hype to see what else our MC can do in the next few books.

Also, the MC is believable, "Believable!!!!!" that's the word I was looking for earlier ...I like the MC, n I can relate to him, understand his thinking ...even if not agree, I can understand the guy. Nothing felt forced to move the plot forward. It was just good. Idk what else to say.

I find myself tolerating unlikable MC's in a lot of books lately ...so I mean it, this was honestly a refreshing change of pace (see what I did there?)

Anyways, I highly recommend giving this one a listen

Oh n the narrator wasn't bad, he did some good voices for side characters ...but the MC/narrator voice was not the best. Overall, I obviously still enjoyed the book ...but I think he cudda done better

not to bad

so far so good however I really wish authors would stop killing off characters to "create drama". when you do it just to create drama it always feels forced and out of place.
