Publisher's Summary

Recalled from the Great Crusade after Ullanor, Rogal Dorn and the VIIth Legion were appointed as the Emperor's praetorians - but only after the Warmaster's treachery was revealed did the full extent of that sacred duty become apparent.

Now, the Solar System comes under attack for the first time since the war began, and many of the seemingly impregnable defences wrought by the Imperial Fists prove inadequate. With all eyes fixed firmly upon this new threat beyond the gates of Terra, who in turn will protect Dorn from the enemy within?

VII

I love the fists and I have a better appreciation for the Alpha legion now. I like how ambiguous the ending is.

Want more like this

The amount of time that it took to get to the finale was filled with fantastic Alpa Legion tom-foolery, and I enjoyed all of the twists that this books three st me.

Understanding tactics.

The story is well told but as with all these books, it is tactically silly.

not the end, but maybe the beginning of the end

The enemy are at the gates and amongst the loyal. They are here, have always been here. Its the way they fight, the alpha legion have planned for every contingent, anticipated every angle, devised every move.... that is except for Rogal Dorn. This is as good a book that has ever come out of a board game. There's intrigue, action, and character. The horus heresy can be a money grubbing mess at times, but this one stands out like a Ruby in Dorns armor. Strap in and fortify your position.

I am Alpharius?

Awesome spy story and background, never much cared for Dorn until now and the book puts the events of Legion into perspective, in that Alpha Legion is losing their minds. Book description didn't do this one justice, not what was expected and that's for the better. Easily somewhere in top ten for the series.

Keeble needs some new voices

Why does at least one of the characters (man or woman) have to sound like a feeble old woman. Most annoying voice imaginable and honestly takes away from the narration for me. Otherwise great story!

outstanding

as a huge horus heresyfan I found this audio exactly as expected from such writers and such a great voice. this book had amazing depth in naritive and character design, gave glimpses in background unexpected, and I was kept on edge the hole time thanks to the diversity in characters created by the outstanding narrator

The Alpha Legion strikes at Terra

The Imperial Fists stand sentinel over Terra. For several years, since the Warmaster's uprising began, they have been fortifying the defenses of the Sol system. Now an enemy strikes at those defenses with a plan that began long before the Heresy started. This novel focuses on the Alpha Legion and Imperial Fists. The primary story involves the leader of Dorn's Huscarls and mimics the formation of Malcador's agents. There are several flashbacks to events over the history of the Fists. The other side of the main story is told from the broken perception of Alpha Legion elements. True to their nature, not even they know the truth of their situation until their mission parameters call for that knowledge. And, perhaps, not even then. The performance was well done and on par with other novels performed by Mr. Keeble. The novel flows well and I enjoyed the story. Mr. French does well providing some background for the Imperial Fists and showing elements of how the Alpha Legion operates. Characters are well formed but I did find Caestus as being a bit uneven. That may have been intentional to demonstrate his relative youth and frame of mind, though. Overall, I enjoyed the novel. Both featured Legions have had limited time in the spotlight in the series thus far so it was nice to see them both shine.

One of the best in the series

This ranks with the First Heretic, The Flight of the Eisenstein and Vengeful Spirit as one of the best books in the entire series. Brilliant pacing, engaging story and believable characters that one can empathise with. This is the second book I have heard Jonathan Keeble narrate, and he is a brilliant voice actor whose narration is second to none. Masterful!

Great Change Of Pace

A great book that is more than just the endless mindless action that the Heresy series can be at times. Great insight into what’s been going on at Terra as they prepare for the arrival of Horus, as well as interesting backstory to the Imperial Fists and Rogal Dorn. Seeing the ways in which the Alpha Legion slipped In past Terra’s defences was also very fun. Don’t skip this one

dull as sin

i really struggled with this one. the narration by jonathan Keeble is top notch as always but i found the story itself to be dull and sin and a real slog. if youre super into 7th or 20th legion it may be the right thing for you but it was jot my cup of tea.
