One of the New York Times 100 Best Books of the 21st Century

In this New York Times bestseller, four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family fight to control their destiny in 20th-century Japan–the inspiration for the television series on Apple TV+.

In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger. When she discovers she is pregnant–and that her lover is married–she accepts an offer of marriage from a gentle, sickly minister passing through on his way to Japan. But her decision to abandon her home, and to reject her son's powerful father, sets off a dramatic saga that will echo down through the generations.

Profoundly moving, Pachinko is a story of love, sacrifice, ambition, and loyalty.

This book needs patience but is a page turner . 4 generations and their life between Korea and Japan and global plus war influence . I think the threads still exist in today’s world for refugees or immigrants to countries . The feeling to be caught between two cultures , starting a new life and new identity all against a Korean background

The narration and the story line

I truly enjoyed the individual development of the characters over the generations. The relationships of financial hardships, love and heartbreak are recurring themes throughout this magnificent novel. Excellent work Lee!

I read this in print and listened to this audio. Sandra Oh brought these characters to life. This heartbreaking yet heart strengthening epic is reminiscent of the literature that is required reading in English classrooms. It’s like a better Steinbeck, a thoughtful and piercing look at identity, race and class through the tale of four generations. I loved this book!
