Publisher's summary

Regan was a robotics scientist that caused the robot takeover of the world. When his last creation finally completes his plan to free himself, it destroys the world in the process. Destruction offers him a second chance to test his wits and cunning in another world. Now tasked with a goal that would upset the balance of a new world, Regan might be a bit more than the people of the world can handle.

This is an alternative retelling of the first Dungeon Robotics book: Establish. All the characters have been altered slightly, and there are new characters. Only the initial chapters have a resemblance to the first book and quickly change paths to a darker side of things.

Really?

I'm used to fanfiction being made by fans. If Peed has enough time to work on this then how much actual effort is going into the main series? Finish one project before starting another please. Even if the plan is to have Regan vs. Regan(which I believe is a very stupid idea) then you can just have a fully powered dark Regan show up in the main... THEN release a "how he got here" series.

Edit: Also, the change in narrator was a bad move.

don't listen to the naysayers

I can't grasp why some people are complaining about this. This book is fantastic and has little to do with the original series. This is a different stand-alone storyline with similar world rebuilding.

Should have stuck with the same Narrator

I understand the change of narrators, a vaguely British or intellectual accent sounds more villainous. However, given that this is one of what I have to expect is a rare turn of pretty much literal author fan fiction I think going with the same narrator would have been a better move. I bet that this was released with a much smaller budget from the publisher than the 1st book was because it just sounds crazy to release an alternate timeline to your story before you finished it in any medium. But if this one does is good as it should then I really hope you swap back to the previous narrators.

For anyone looking for an actual analysis of the story itself without much spoilers it's a pretty faithful re-creation with the obvious caveat that everybody is more evil. I think the best way to look at it is the prime timeline is a world where creation is the primary force and this world is one where destruction is the primary force. How dark that makes our world seem by comparison is up to you to judge.

I prefer the Sorcerer King series

I first came across this author through his Sorcerer King novels which I enjoyed so I had high hopes for this dungeon series. However, the biggest issue I have with this is that I just couldn't get myself to care about any of the characters. As for the MC, I'm all for villains as mains but not psychopaths. This guy is acting like a caricature of an evil bad guy for no real reason. What is his goal? To destroy the world. Why? Because he gave up on life in an entirely different world a lifetime ago? If he fails in his goal, then what happens? Nothing really. He doesn't care about his life in his new world either so win or lose, he dies either way so why should anyone care about his story? There are no real consequences. Last but not least, it's pretty hard to get past the Captain Kirk narration once you get it into your head that it sounds like Captain Kirk.

Great action

This series is looks like it might dovetail with the Dungeon Robotics series. It’s pretty fun, except I’m not a fan of evil MC’s, so I’m unwilling to give it 5 stars

Only if you. Want a. True... Captain Kirk.

Story was ok, not nearly as engaging as the normal version. A less intelligent Regan and a less interesting supporting cast was just "fine" vs great to me. Genius acting not like a genius was just bleh though.

Narration wise, I couldn't even get half way. The.. long and... sporadic pauses between words was... in my opinion ridiculous. Making every character sound darker and grittier was definitely the intent as well, but for some it just makes them sound cartoonish. The dungeon fairy is a straight up joke with this voice acting, not because of a male narrator, but because they feel like bad imitations of over the top charactachure characters.
But the pausing. Even on 1.75x speed the stuttering pauses between every few words for dramatic emphasis was horrific to listen to.

First story by this author I couldn't finish; I'll be getting it in print since the story is still interesting.

Much better!

Enjoyed this version alot more than the original. Tristan is not my favourite narrator but still does a stand up job. Keep them coming!

A darker take on a dungeon core story

A darker take on what a dungeon core could be, with some interesting ideas.

I've listened to all of Peed's older Dungeon Robotics Series available on this platform. While not perfect, I really enjoyed his previous series as a fun, power-fantasy romp.

This starts off as a darker, alternate-universe version of that, where everyone is a bit of a d*ck.

While it does not have the same immediate 'hook' of a robotic engineer in a magical fantasy realm as the first series. This story does take some interesting turns.

Peed's writing has improved with this book, a lot of superfluous 'side-story' has been streamlined, where before you really needed to happen to like the details about the robots, dungeon decoration and 'how cool or hot' the characters were, now he has created a more consistent story driven experience. Some of the these flaws linger here and there, but nothing too obtrusive.

Oddly enough, it feels as if there is a bit more of a focus on character development is this version, which is a not the author's forte. The bizarre world, systems and magic Peed created in his first book take a backseat in this current series, which I feel was the main appeal of his books. If this was the authors conscious decision, it is a bold one, but for me personally this means that I enjoy this less than the Robotics series.

I also really dislike the narrator for this audiobook, Morris' sentence cadence is very stop-start; the rhythm of speaking often is not inline with the end of the sentence. Sort of a William Shatner's "Capt. James T. Kirk" type of narration.
