Publisher's summary
It’s amateur hour at the White House. So says New York Times best-selling author Edward Klein in his political exposé The Amateur. Tapping into the public’s growing sentiment that President Obama is in over his head, The Amateur argues that Obama’s toxic combination of incompetence and arrogance has run our nation and his presidency off the rails.
“Obama was both completely inexperienced and ideologically far to the left of most Americans when he entered the White House,” says Klein. “And he was so arrogant that he didn’t even know what he didn’t know.”
Klein, who is known for getting the inside scoop on everyone from the Kennedys to the Clintons, reveals never before published details about the Obama administration’s political inner workings, as well as Barack and Michelle’s personal lives, including the inordinate influence Michelle wields over Barack and her feud with a high profile celebrity; the real reason Rahm Emanuel left the White House (it wasn’t for family reasons); why Valerie Jarrett’s role is closer to that of Rasputin than impartial senior advisor; how Obama has purposefully forgotten and ignored those who put him in power, including the Kennedys and the Jewish and African American communities in Chicago.
From Obama’s conceited and detached demeanor, to his detrimental reliance on Michelle Obama and Valerie Jarrett’s advice, to the Obamas’ extravagant and out of touch lifestyle, The Amateur reveals a president whose ignorance and incompetence are sabotaging himself, his presidency, and America.

Story
Barack Obama’s inauguration as president on January 20, 2009, inspired the world. But the great promise of “Change We Can Believe In” was immediately tested by the threat of another Great Depression, a worsening war in Afghanistan, and an entrenched and deeply partisan system of business as usual in Washington. Despite all the coverage, the backstory of Obama’s historic first year in office has until now remained a mystery.

Story
During one sweltering week in July 1948, the Democratic Party gathered in Philadelphia for its national convention. The most pressing and controversial issue facing the delegates was not whom to nominate for president—the incumbent, Harry Truman, was the presumptive candidate—but whether the Democrats would finally embrace the cause of civil rights and embed it in their official platform. On the convention's final day, Hubert Humphrey, the relatively obscure mayor of the midsized city of Minneapolis, ascended the podium.

In The Red and the Blue, cable news star and acclaimed journalist Steve Kornacki follows the twin paths of Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich, two larger-than-life politicians who exploited the weakened structure of their respective parties to attain the highest offices. For Clinton, that meant contorting himself around the various factions of the Democratic party to win the presidency. Gingrich employed a scorched-earth strategy to upend the permanent Republican minority in the House, making him speaker.

Ronald Reagan today is a conservative icon, celebrated for transforming the American domestic agenda and playing a crucial part in ending communism in the Soviet Union. In his masterful new biography, H. W. Brands argues that Reagan, along with FDR, was the most consequential president of the 20th century. Reagan took office at a time when the public sector, after a half century of New Deal liberalism, was widely perceived as bloated and inefficient, an impediment to personal liberty.

The Carter presidency was on life support. The Democrats, desperate to keep power and yearning to resurrect former glory, turned to Ted Kennedy. Camelot's End details the incredible drama of Kennedy's challenge - what led to it, how it unfolded, and its lasting effects - with cinematic sweep. It is a story about what happened to the Democratic Party when the country's long string of successes, luck, and global dominance following World War II ran its course, and how, on a quest to recapture the magic of JFK, Democrats plunged themselves into an intra-party civil war.

In addition to the familiar tales, Whistlestop also remembers the forgotten stories about the bruising and reckless campaigns of the 19th century.

Good Listen, Dramatic at Times
Interesting. Not surprised by some things the author reported on especially in the last chapter. Was very dramatic at times so some of the authors report didn't hold any weight with me, although the title is very true, Obama is very much an amateur. When it is presented like it was, it becomes very clear we need a change in the presidency.

A MUST READ!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, I would recommend this book. It opens your eyes to a lot of stuff. This book isn't someone's "opinion". So many people Obama and Michelle crapped on. Including Oprah Winfrey. If you are someone that will not believe the harsh truths about Obama, you should open your eyes.
What did you like best about this story?
The whole thing.
Have you listened to any of John McLain’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, I haven't
What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?
Just how arrogant Obama and Michelle are.

Not unexpected - but sobering
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
The old adage that says "Where there's smoke, there's fire," is probably as true here as it ever was. Democrats will undoubtedly call the author names and denigrate his credentials, but the truth is that Obama has attempted too much change in too short a time. It appears that either all these things are true about his arrogance, or he is not the communicator people believed he would be back in 2008.There has never before been a President whose history we know almost nothing about, and is so questionable. When not one person comes forward who remembers him at college (other than Harvard,) and his birth location, and religious convictions are still contested, one wonders who this man really is.If even a small percentage of this book is true, we have a "strange duck" as our leader. I know the "politically correct" crowd (otherwise known as the "Say it this way, whether it is true or not" crowd) would just like to accept what the President says as his true intentions. But too many times in the past he has said one thing and done exactly the opposite. One can say that's politics, but in the case of Obama it appears to be more a case of a knee-jerk style of leadership. So Democrats will hate it, and Republicans will love it. History, if not rewritten by progressives, however, will show this man to truly be a divider of people, a failure as a leader, and probably a Presidential failure in the class of Jimmy Carter.

Makes you really wonder how we ever elected him.
Would you consider the audio edition of The Amateur to be better than the print version?
It is a great story for listening to and the perfect voice narration as it comes out at the perfect time with the elections only months away.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Amateur?
The story of the backstabbing of Bill and Hilary Clinton reminds of the classic betrayals throughout history.
Have you listened to any of John McLain’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes Indeed.
What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?
The radical nature, the raw power interests and zero patriotism of the Obama's and Clinton's.

Answers The questions why"change " did not occur
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, one has to read it with an open mind
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
Conservative writer but gave the liberal perpective too
Which character – as performed by John McLain – was your favorite?
N/A
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Yes women seem to influence Mr Obamas decision making. It also seems that there was
Islamic teachings in his childhood that was not mentioned in Mr. Obama's Political biogrphy. He became a christan as an adult. Not that that should matter but living in both worlds myself there is a particular mindset between the two faiths.
Any additional comments?
A good read, be opened minded

The True Obama Weaknesses Revealed
Obama's inexperience and the negative impact on US democracy/economy is uncovered. His reliance on close confidant, Valerie Jarret (sp) and Michelle Obama for policy decisions vs experts on his staff has created a riff within the administration as Obama continues to ignore the recommendations of his staff. Even the Clintons are plotting his political demise because of his amateurist form of leadership (or lack of). A must read for those who are considering supporting Obama in 2012. Even his most supportive financial backers in 2008 are abandoning him in droves. The author , Ed Klein, exposes the serious problems faced by this president in gaining support for another 4 years in office and the cosequences of another Obama victory.

The Halo Effect Trumps Everything
If you could sum up The Amateur in three words, what would they be?
Obama President - How?
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Amateur?
Obama dumping his mentor, Jeremiah Wright and not being vetted about it before the last election.
Have you listened to any of John McLain’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Not to my knowledge.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Chapter 17 "The Obama Doctrine"
Obama believes, "The US is not the greatest nation"
Any additional comments?
Since this book is number 1 on the New York Times best sellers list, I trust the statements made in this book will be fact tested. This will require Obama to be vetted in a more objective manner.
If this book is true and the US voters understand that it is true, Obama will be a one term US President.
The job of President of the US is not one for complete "on-the-job training."
