Publisher's Summary

Learn how to use the gift of pain with Pema Chödrön, a Buddhist nun in the Tibetan Vajrayana tradition. She teaches that it is in suffering where you will find the seeds of your awakening and that vulnerability is actually your greatest spiritual resource. You'll learn how to create your own spiritual retreat, the key teachings necessary for cultivating your own "soft spot" - the gateway to your own noble heart, the promise of the Four Limitless Ones, and the teachings on the Six Paramitas: the Buddha's own map of the journey to enlightenment. This program was recorded within the peaceful shrine room of Gampo Abbey, Chödrön's home on the cliffs of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia.

SOME MOMENTS OF INSIGHT

This is a series of lectures which are presented largely "off the cuff" so to speak, and as such, there are frequent lapses in clarity. It is taken for granted that the listener is familiar with Buddhist terms, none of which are explained even in an elementary way. As a result, I frequently found myself wondering what in the world she was talking about. This being said, there were genuine moments of insight, and Pema Chodron comes across as a caring human being who appears to be devoting her life to helping others to be free from suffering. The listener is guided through various methods of meditation which I found helpful, and I did gain a sense of space and freedom beyond the din of the mind.

Calming Effect

I continue to really enjoy this audio, although it is over 9 hours in length, I have listened to it many times over, and receive new insights each and every time. It has a calming effect which is greatly needed for many of us while we are living our lives in this intensely competitive and fast paced society! I highly recommend this audio book for anyone who is searching for ways to deal with the day to day ups and downs of life.

I listen to this to go to sleep

Very peaceful, I don't usually follow much of what she's saying, cause I use this to fall asleep to...but knowing the subject, it's the type of thing I want seeping into my subconscious while I sleep. I love it and listen to it often.

Help for PTSD

This book and this path is the answer I have been seeking to help heal the suffering from the trauma of abuse. I can now deal more effectively with memories, triggers and the perpetrators. I can also take others by the hand to ease their suffering.

Great series of talks and practices

I enjoyed the individual practices as well as all the talks she gave with them.

The ego Bodhichitta Practice which includes the 3 noble principles was helpful in dating relationships. The second one was Shmatha and it was about cultivating friendliness through meditation, posture, calm abiding working with thoughts, non-grasping mind which was good for dealing with anger that I've carried for years. The third was developing inner strength & trust by experiencing reality. It included the 4 limitless ones (loving kindness, compassion, joy, & equanimity, materialism). I find it hard to trust myself with my emotions and not blowing up on someone, so this one was really helpful in gaining trust over myself. The fourth one was Loving Kindness called 'The Practice of Maitri.' The roots of suffering and happiness, ignorance, etc. What I thought would make me happy don't. I'm learning to live with wanting and then letting go of the item. The fifth one was about your ego's weakness and
compassion practice. Letting go of addiction and obsession, dualistic thinking, far & near enemies of practice, pity/overwhelm/forgiveness This one is good if you put Gil's talk on letting go of past battles your still fighting.

I could go through each practice however, it will help you more to go through them yourself. Experience is worth more than any brief overview no matter how in-depth it may be. I did pay attention to the seventh on on Tonglen and I'm finding it easier to do. I'm also learning to let myself be healed.

Pema did it again

A marvelous series of lectures with explanations, meditations and a text to help those who are ready to do a "self guided" retreat. It taught me a great deal and is so full of wisdom that I keep listening every so many weeks.

An immersion in compassion.....

This is one of those audio books where the voice of the reader makes all the difference to how the content is experienced. I highly recommend this book for those who need an immersion in compassion!

The teachings can be absorbed by a kind of osmosis made far more accessible with Pema Chodron's warm, accepting and sonorous tones!

A must listen for anyone.

A very insightful audio book, presented with compassion, humour and down to earth humanity. Lots of useful lessons on how to meditate, practise and knowledge of Buddhism and it's teachings. Over nine hours but so interesting and practical it soon passes by. Lots to learn and can be used to refer back to time and again. Would highly recommend if you're curious or wanting some direction and understanding on how to start a daily practise, that will enhance and change your life for the better and of those you meet along the way. Pema is truly a gifted teacher, dedicated to her practise and a gift of love to us all.
