Publisher's summary

Du Pre remembers when you could send animal skins to Sears Roebuck and get merchandise in return. Now the wolves are gone from the mountains, and outsiders want them back. The trouble is, a tussle over wildlife is getting people killed.

First, two activists die by a sniper's rifle. Then four more lives are snuffed out as a brutal winter storm barrels down on a carnival of Feds, reporters, and protestors. Du Pre knows one of his own people must be behind the bloodletting, and that in this rugged land, you don't quit hunting until you're dead.

Great writing combined with excellent reading!

Great writing combined with excellent narration made the characters come to life in this third book of Peter Biden's wonderful series, featuring Gabriel Du Pre. When outsiders put wolves on the Wild Mountains, the local folks get upset. Someone kills the wolves; but when someone starts killing people too, Gabriel and the rest of the law enforcement officers have their hands full. Bowen blends action, mystery, and even humor into a story that will leave you looking for the next book in this series.

Far below the quality of the first two novels.

After enjoying the first two Gabriel Du Pre’ novels, it was hard to take this third one. It’s bad. The author poorly expresses his own dark-age anti-environmental politics through the speech and actions of the protagonist. And that poor political translation reflects negatively on the entire cast of characters. Thumbs down!

Riveting

I loved this book too. Again the characters are interesting and are always up to something. Good plot.

too much cussing

I think that it would of been better if it weren't for the swearing. Ii seems that you were making fun of the native Americans.

The First Two Were Good

This third installment just came off as stupid. I enjoyed them before, but this one took a nose dive, with the characters looking like idiots.

Treehuggers need not apply

The controversy over reintroduction of wolves to various western states is still ongoing. It was interesting to read an interpretation favoring the ranchers’ perspective, however as one who sympathizes with wolves, it was distasteful at times. It was kind of funny that the characters seemed more sympathetic to man-eating grizzlies...I like the grizzlies as well, from a distance.

Good story

I started finding the story difficult to follow because of time. I couldn't tell if days or months had past from segment or chapter. Dates are not mentioned as a frame of reference. But the story unfolds and time didn't matter so much
