Publisher's summary

When 13-year-old Matthew Whateley goes missing from a prestigious West Sussex public school, Inspector Thomas Lynley receives a call for help.

Lynley, his partner Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, and forensic scientist Simon St. James begin a search for a child - then for a child killer!

Lynley and Havers sense evil behind the school's cloistered walls. Their investigation exposes their own emotional wounds...and blinds them to the signs of another murder in the making.

UGH avoid this version

Scratchy old recording - as though in a static cave. Hard to follow. Excellent story in the Detective Lynnly series.

Grim, miserable tale

A grim take of torture, homosexual rape and murder at a posh English boarding school. There are no redeeming characteristics here. Narration in this 2 hour audiobook was rushed and difficult to understand. I have enjoyed other books by Elizabeth George but not this one. I cannot recommend.

OK for a lonely weekend!

Intertesing. Twists and turns keep you glued to the text...but be ready to listen closely...lots of names and places enter into the dialogue.....but it is slick.....enjoy.

Great story as part of a series..but

The production values on this version were terrible. And the music signaling the ellipses of the longer book was bad. Al this was very distracting.

quality of the audio is awful

Very hard to hear and understand - and the music makes it even worse! Had to listen to it at .75% to even understand the words...

Old recording

Derek Jacobi is, of course, wonderful. But this book is clearly an old recording - hard to hear.

If you love Elizabeth George skip this one

This is perhaps the worst recording I have ever tried to listen to from Audible. I downloaded it in several formats and followed all directions on how to improve the audio, but it was barely understandable. because I love her books I slogged on through the story line inspite of missing a lot due to the poor audio! Silly me!

terrible recording quality

Great story, great narrator, terrible/scratchy recording. There is another version available via Audible; choose that one instead.
