Publisher's Summary

Featuring a conversation with the authors!

In this spectacular father/son collaboration, Stephen King and Owen King tell the highest of high-stakes stories: What might happen if women disappeared from the world of men?

In a future so real and near it might be now, something happens when women go to sleep: They become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If they are awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent; and while they sleep they go to another place....

The men of our world are abandoned, left to their increasingly primal devices. One woman, however, the mysterious Evie, is immune to the blessing or curse of the sleeping disease. Is Evie a medical anomaly to be studied? Or is she a demon who must be slain?

Set in a small Appalachian town whose primary employer is a women's prison, Sleeping Beauties is a wildly provocative, gloriously absorbing father/son collaboration between Stephen King and Owen King.

    "Horrible narration."

Huge Steven King fan and was thoroughly looking forward to this book as I had bought it prerelease. The narrator absolutely drove me nuts and ruined the experience for me.

    "So much missed potential! "

I'm a lifelong Stephen King reader and I found the extreme amount of feminism and stereotypical portrayal of Appalachians so out of character. The premise is very intriguing with lots of potential which is lost in too many incomplete side stories; even the supernatural aspects cried to be tied to the Tower but we're left vaugue. I really enjoyed King's work with Straub so I was underwhelmed by this attemp? can we get a redo, please??

"Loved the story! Narration a bit wonky."

The story was unique and realistic enough to be frightening. I would suggest it to anyone that likes any of either of the King’s work. Narration was a bit forced on the Appalachian accents and I was expecting a bit more voice fluctuations between characters, but overall ok.

"Fantastic Book! I loved every minute of it."

This is set in Appalachia, where I live, so I could appreciate it a lot more than most of Stephen King"s Maine based books. The setting, for me, was, in that way,, very refreshing. I'm a huge Stephen King fan and have read more than 100 of his various offerings and I must say that this may be toward the top of the list. As a woman, I could appreciate the writers' insights into what it's like to be a woman in today's world and how the experience of being a woman can leave one very jaded and dissolutioned with the average man and his attitudes. It impressed me that this could have been written by two men. Maybe this book can serve as a wake-up call for those who read it into the plight of half the population who live in the shadow of anger and destructive nature of the other half. I believe that both halfs should take away lessons from these pages. Men should learn to curb that nature and women should be emboldened to find that within themselves that would make them more whole human beings.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable book that ranks up there with The Stand in terms of character development and a well thought out story. The authors should be very proud of this brilliant work of art.

    "Amazing"

I read the reviews before purchasing and I’m not gonna lie, I hesitated. Idk why since I love alllll Stephen King’s books but people’s reviews were really harsh. I personally loved that he included a few political & social issues that are going on now.

"Great, layered story. Enjoyed narrator just fine."

Started with foolish trepidation after reading scathing reviews about the narrator. I was pleasantly surprised. I think she did a superb job, especially with not only the multiple of characters portrayed but different sexes as well.
The story is a little of what you might expect and a lot of what you might not. Wonderful flow and great descriptive detail that kept the reader interested, not bored or skipping ahead. The characters were very well developed and you felt like you knew them, whether you liked them or not.
If you’re looking for horror, this isn’t it. Although I wouldn’t say it’s for the lighthearted either.

    "Couldn’t Get Into It"

I’m a HUGE Stephen King fan. Huge. I just couldn’t get into this book. 10 hours in, I gave up. So long, many characters, confusion. Politics - geez, I didn’t think I was going to get more of that. I was looking for entertainment and just didn’t find it here.

    "Good... Not great"

I think this book contained a powerful message about the power of women and how integral they are in every facet of society, however, it would be nice if they hadn't defaulted to the stereotypical male bashing and blaming in order to achieve this transmission.

The narrator is unbelievably talented and can do anything with her voice. She was an excellent choice!

In the end, I would've liked a conclusion to some of the novel's biggest plot lines instead of the pseudo poetic way they'd transpired. Overall, Sleeping Beauty was entertaining and well written, but the ending left me cold. Sometimes I don't want to consider political implications or similarities to real life. As a high school history teacher, I'm often bombarded with American politics and feel desperate for an escape. I just want to lose myself in a novel and make my own connections and the Kings made them for me here.

    "disappointed"

I love, love, love Stephen King - and have read & listened to many many books. I was impressed initially with the writing.

Story was ok at first - then very confusing...too many characters - only listened to 5 chapters. Narrator was awful - voice not only grated on me, but the up and down (whisper to loud) prompted me to remove the book from my device - I listen while I drive so I was continually adjusting the volume. I will note never to purchase a book narrated by Marin Ireland (and Stephen King himself)
