Publisher's Summary

She almost caught him once. Now, he's back.

For three years, Investigator Cassie Dewell has been on a hunt for a serial killer known as the Lizard King whose hunting grounds are the highways and truck stops where runaways and prostitutes are most likely to vanish. Cassie almost caught him...once. Working for the Bakken County, North Dakota sheriff's department, Cassie has set what she believes is the perfect trap, and she has lured him and his truck to a depot. But the plan goes horribly wrong, and the blame falls on Cassie. Disgraced, she loses her job, and investigation into her role is put into motion.

At the same time, Kyle Westergaard, a troubled kid whom Cassie has taken under her wing, has disappeared after telling people that he's going off on a long-planned adventure. Kyle's grandmother begs Cassie to find him, and, with nothing else to do, Cassie agrees - all the while hunting the truck driver. Now Cassie is a lone wolf. And in the same way that two streams converge into a river, Kyle's disappearance may have a more sinister meaning than anyone realizes. With no allies, no support, and only her own wits to rely on, Cassie must take down a killer who is as ruthless as he is cunning. But can she do it alone, without losing her own humanity or her own life?

    "Nice! A female protagonist!"

I liked the cast of characters in this story. I liked the plot--mostly. It was a little bit too coincidental, but that's C. J. Box. You buckle up and go along for the ride.

I'd like to give it more than 4 stars, but I can't quite get to 5. I'd definitely read more about Cassie, but there's something lacking in the character development. I came away with a better sense of Bull than I did Cassie. Of course, Bull hits right in that sweet spot that Mr. Box does so well.

Cassie is a departure for him. For a first effort, it wasn't bad. Solid B+. He still has a ways to go to effortlessly describe a female character. I think he could benefit from reading some female authors (oh, the horror!) like Karin Slaughter. She absolutely nails that female, career cop character with Amanda.

Having awaited this author's next work, I pre-ordered Paradise Valley without even having read the publisher's summary- didn't need to. C J Box never disappoints!

    "Sorry, can't listen to narrator"

I know reading a book is a very difficult thing to do, but Christina Delaine unlistenable. Her attempt to differentiate the characters is so bad I can not finish this book and will be returning. Too bad since I love CJ Box.

"A fun read. Great for a trip. Upper east side Susie"

You will enjoy this novel as it takes you through a storey of good vs. evil. It is a soap opera in literary form. Very easy to get into and you just keep turning the pages. It is possible that author Box can have s new series on tap if he chooses to join the Sheriffs family in Wyoming!!

    "Good story, but"

I am a Joe Pickett fan, while the story was good, it did not compare to Joe Pickett. I liked that the ending did leave room for a sequel. Hopefully with a different narrator. Narration was awful.
