Skip the introduction, it contains spoilers

Great story, great characters, the only fly in the ointment is Philip Pullman giving away a couple of important plot points in his introduction.

Skip the introduction and get straight into the story

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU BUY.

Everything about this thriller is excellent but they completely ruin bits in the first 2 minutes.
The first chapter is "this is a fantastic story about a guy who does xyz. nearly dies doing abc and escapes using ...." then adds he meets people like ....who might be on either side!
What the hell were they thinking?
If you get this, and I definitely think you should. Just skip chapter 1. I was completely shocked at what it revealed and was as bad as film trailers where you see the good guy was actually the baddie all along. This is a horrendous mistake. Ok have 30 seconds of the reader saying how great it is but honestly, I could kill the guy for ruining quite a few plot turns. I was reminded so many times during the actual story when you go "oh this must be the bit when he escapes from ..." Where is the joy in that?

Masterful thriller

Still compelling after more than two decades. Narration was professional and held the tension well.

Brilliant story

Philip Pullman was not exaggerating, this really is an excellent thriller. It's not a pure spy drama, it feels a bit more real and slow burning than the typical spy adventure. No practiced tradecraft, just a smart, relentless, resourceful, gritty protagonist. A really intricate story with lots of twists. The final third of the book is real edge of your seat stuff. Highly recommended.

Excellent yarn, beautifully narrated

This was virtually unputdownable! From the first page to the final few words you're totally engaged with the plot and its various characters and further enhanced by the wonderful narration.

All encompassing!

my first spy thriller and I loved it! despite a myriad of accents the narrator was amazing and authentic and I marvel at his skill.

One of the the best stories ever written

This storey is one of the most amazing ever written. Gripping from beginning to end. An adventure to top all adventures, against all odds. As Phillip Pullman says in the intro, just the write amount of detail to make it believable. A must read.
