Publisher's Summary

Even for an average citizen, a love triangle is dangerous business. For assassin John Rainn - "one of the most compelling lead characters in the genre" (USA Today) it's going to be downright deadly.

When Rain learns that his former lover, Midori, has been raising their child in New York, Rain senses a chance for reconciliation, perhaps even for redemption. But Midori and the child are being watched by Rain's enemies, and Rain's sudden appearance puts them in terrible danger. To save them, Rain is forced to use the same deadly talents he had been hoping to leave behind. With the help of Tatsu, his one-time nemesis in the Japanese FBI; and Dox, the former Marine sniper whose good ol' boy persona masks a killer as deadly as Rain himself, Rain races against time to bring his enemies into the open and eliminate them forever. But to finish the job, he'll need one more ally: Mossad operative Delilah, a woman for whom Rain's hopes with Midori represent an altogether different kind of threat....

Superb Book!

In 2012 and 2013 Barry Eisler republished the first six novels in his John Rain series with new titles. Extermis, John Rain Book 5, was originally titled The Last Assassin.

Extremis is one of Eisler's best novels and is a auperb action thriller. It is filled with action and suspense. It also shows more than any other book in the series the humanity and the emotional side of John Rain. I love this book and recommend it without qualification. Earlier books in the series provide some helpful background on Rain, Dox, Madori, Dalilah, ,and other characters, but Extremis provides sufficient background that reading the earlier books in the series is unnecessary.

When Eisler retitled the books, he also changed the narrator of the audiobooks to himself, an excellent improvement.

Eisler is a big name author of thrillers. He and other authors including J. A. (Joe) Konrath were leaders in the movement toward self publishing. All lovers of reading owe them a debt of gratitude for reducing the cost of books at retail. Previously unknown authors who could not get published, such as the superb British author Mark Dawson, owe them an even larger debt. Thank you Barry!

Love The Angst in Rain

If you could sum up Extremis in three words, what would they be?

Exciting, compelling, and sad.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Extremis?

When John returns to New York to save Midori only to be confronted at the airport by two thugs. Hope did they know? He disposes of them only to be turhed away by Midori. When he realizes what has happened to,his carefully constructed but impossible dream, it is sad. Then he returns to find his friend dying. The ending gives hope though.

Which scene was your favorite?

The one where it dawns on him that there is life and it is up to him to find it. Dox and Delilah are waiting.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Assassins are human. Check Out Rains.

Any additional comments?

I love Barry Eisler's narration.

Barry is superb. His stories are involved and interesting. I love reading books where I learn something. He intertwines real life events and gives you a real flavor of the country and people. On to the next in the series.

Extremis Maximus!

I loved this book and highly recommend to all. Barry Eisler’s storyline just seems to keep getting better as the John Rain series progresses. This book in particular, had an extremely human side to it concerning illness and pushing people away. It will leave you wondering about what you value in this world and how important time is to you. The supporting cast helps a lot. I would give this book 6 stars if I could. Enjoy!

Nice story - I love the way Eisler reads

I can't wait to read the rest of John Rain stories. My favorite book in the series is still the second one but I have enjoyed this one a lot as well.

Best John Rain book so far.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Dox is my kind of guy, though I know he'd never be faithful..... He brings out an almost goofy side to the until-now humorless Rain.

What does Barry Eisler bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

It is refreshing to hear an author who so ably narrates his own work. Many can't. Whether it's a diffident Japanese or the brash Dox, Eisler understands the "tone" he wishes to set with each character and can actually accomplish it.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

While I've been enjoying the John Rain series for strategic and its tactical content, I have found it mostly without humor. So the scene with John, Dox and the two sumo wrestlers on the beach was a very welcome surprise. Laugh-out-loud funny. And, of course, all the trash talking between these two macho guys is a bonus,

Enjoyed this one too!

They just keep getting better! These John Rain books, for me, have so many elements that hold my attention and make for such entertaining listening. No spoilers but this one has me holding my breath in tense moments, gasping at the action, laughing out loud and even shedding tears. The relationship between John and Dox is the best! Dox is a great character and I am so glad to see John letting him in and slowly learning to trust and abandon such a solitary existence. On to the next book and I can't wait.
