What lurks behind the charming façade?

Writer Mark Endicott moves to a Dorset village, where he buys the small, almost derelict Corpse Path Cottage. It occurs to him that it would make the ideal setting for a murder.

A sinister promise.

Before long, one of the village’s residents is mysteriously shot dead nearby.

Mark’s life begins to unravel even as he helps the police solve the mystery. In the process he uncovers a tale of intrigue, bigamy, and blackmail.

The secrets of the villagers won’t stay secret for long.

But at what cost?

I had to get use to the narrator but he was okay once I did.

I liked the book.

The characters were developed and most of the relationships revealed before the murder. Many mysteries start with the murder and go backwards. I like this way better.

Character Development

There were a lot of characters in this book which sometimes makes it difficult to discern who is talking. The narrator is overall good but doesn't do the best at separating between those characters. The story itself was good. There were several surprises. I would classify this as a cozy mystery. I appreciate that this is a good, clean story, that does have some lighthearted characters in a post-war village. I will look for more from this author.

Unexpected connections

This one winds up slowly and the death isn’t until midway through the book — but if you pay attention early and enjoy meeting the townsfolk of God’s Blessing along with Mark Endicott, you’ll find it worth the trouble. As other reviewers have noted, there are indeed a lot of characters in this book, but I found it really fascinating and colorful as an entire small English town, realized on the page.

Slow start but well worth it

Wonderful performance by narrator. This book comes to life through his abundant skill. Everything you could want in a relaxing listen… quirky characters, surprises, and a sweet little romance. Sit back and enjoy!

Easy listen on a quiet day.
