Acerca de esta escucha
A smart, personal, darkly funny examination of what it’s like to be a woman at the crossroads of a midlife crisis, from the New York Times best-selling author of People I Want to Punch in the Throat
“I inhaled this book in one sitting; it’s a must-read for anyone over 40. This should become the gift all girlfriends give one another.” (Zibby Owens, host of the award-winning podcast Moms Don’t Have Time to Read Books)
Jen Mann had what appeared to be the perfect life: a successful career as a best-selling author and award-winning blogger, a devoted husband, teenage kids who weren’t total jerks, and a badass minivan. So imagine her surprise when, at 47 years old, a midlife crisis kicked her straight in the ladybits.
Midlife Bites offers Jen’s trademark wit and honesty when it comes to important conversations and observations about women in midlife. Here, listeners will be able to come together and find anecdotes and practical ideas to help navigate through this major point in their lives. For women who may feel isolated or overlooked, this collection of original essays offers valuable insights, takeaways, and, most important, a productive way forward. Jen shares her own story as well as advice and wisdom from the online community she built, tackling everything that bites about midlife, where nothing is off-limits: raging hormones; sex (after 40); finding your purpose; learning to make new friends (yes, even as a grown-up); moving out of your comfort zone; having conversations that count, no more small talk; and how to deal with rogue chin hairs (and other nuisances).
Jen Mann is leading the movement to create a new space where middle-aged women can share openly and honestly with one another. This no-BS collection of essays will help start the conversation and keep it going, because as women, we all have a right to be happy, fulfilled, and whole, no matter what stage of life.

Any given day brings a never-ending list of things to do. There’s the work thing, the catch-up thing, the laundry thing, the creative thing, the exercise thing, the family thing, the thing we don’t want to do, and the thing we’ve been putting off, despite it being the most important thing. Even on days when we get a lot done, the thing left undone can leave us feeling guilty, anxious, or disappointed.

We all want to feel less anxiety, guilt, anger, and sadness. We want to obsess less and be less lonely, and free ourselves from our demons, compulsive habits, and stress. But as humans (unlike rocks), we experience all of these. And, paradoxically, trying to avoid and control them only makes things worse. Having struggled with serious mental illness for many years himself, Mark Freeman has become a dedicated mental-health advocate and coach. He makes the case that instead of trying to feel less and avoid pain and stress, we need to build emotional fitness, especially our capacity for strength, balance, and focus.

When Ada Calhoun found herself in the throes of a midlife crisis, she thought that she had no right to complain. She was married with children and a good career. So why did she feel miserable? And why did it seem that other Generation X women were miserable, too? Calhoun decided to find some answers. She looked into housing costs, HR trends, credit card debt averages, and divorce data. At every turn, she saw a pattern: sandwiched between the Boomers and Millennials, Gen X women were facing new problems as they entered middle age, problems that were being largely overlooked.

Throughout the book, Shlesinger dives from one subject into the next, making her hilarious asides the basis of her stories, much like she does in her stand-up comedy. Topics range from dissecting social expectations to the notion that products marketed specifically to women are scams, and all manner of things in between.

Reseñas de la Crítica
“One part instruction manual (or maybe destruction manual?), one part group therapy, and all kinds of hilarious, Midlife Bites made the prospect of hitting my mid-forties seem a lot more manageable and a lot less mystifying. Jen Mann is leading the midlife revolution, and I am so here for it!” (Sarah Knight, New York Times best-selling author of The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck)
“Jen Mann does it again with Midlife Bites, proving that she's one of the most honest—and funniest—voices out there. Readers will laugh, cheer, and sometimes cringe at how perceptively she sums up the midlife experience. Buy this book for all your girlfriends—they’ll thank you!” (Jen Lancaster, New York Times best-selling author of Welcome to the United States of Anxiety and Bitter Is the New Black)
“If you’ve ever felt like you’re screaming into the void alone, you’re not. Jen Mann is there. Admittedly and masterfully out of her comfort zone, Jen comes at her midlife self with a wallop of self-introspection and vulnerability, thereby giving all of us permission to say the paralyzing quiet parts out LOUD. Every woman who reads this book will say thank you, Jen Mann, in between snorts and sniffles.” (Faith Salie, author of Approval Junkie and panelist on NPR’s Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!)

What does it really mean to be a grown-up in today's world? We assume that once we "get it together" with the right job, marry the right person, have children, and buy a home, all is settled and well. But adulthood presents varying levels of growth and is rarely the respite of stability we expected. Turbulent emotional shifts can take place anywhere between the ages of 35 and 70 when we question the choices we've made, realize our limitations, and feel stuck - commonly known as the "midlife crisis".

The midlife crisis is the butt of so many jokes, but this long-derided life stage has an upside. What if we could reframe our thinking about the natural transition of midlife not as a crisis, but as a chrysalis—a time when something profound awakens in us, as we shed our skin, spread our wings, and pollinate our wisdom? In Learning to Love Midlife, Chip Conley offers an alternative narrative to the way we commonly think of our 40s, 50s and 60s. Drawing on the latest social science research, inspiring stories, and timeless wisdom, he reveals 12 reasons why life gets better with age.

Historia

Historia
There's no such thing as an inevitable midlife crisis, Barbara Bradley Hagerty writes in this provocative, hopeful book. It's a myth, an illusion. New scientific research explodes the fable that midlife is a time when things start to go downhill for everybody. In fact, midlife can be a great new adventure, when you can embrace fresh possibilities, purposes, and pleasures. In Life Reimagined, Hagerty explains that midlife is about renewal.

Historia
When Ada Calhoun found herself in the throes of a midlife crisis, she thought that she had no right to complain. She was married with children and a good career. So why did she feel miserable? And why did it seem that other Generation X women were miserable, too? Calhoun decided to find some answers. She looked into housing costs, HR trends, credit card debt averages, and divorce data. At every turn, she saw a pattern: sandwiched between the Boomers and Millennials, Gen X women were facing new problems as they entered middle age, problems that were being largely overlooked.

witty and relatable
Laughed out loud at several moments. The Next Life No Men chapter rang true and, in light of it, the spirit guide reveal was hilarious. The book reads like chatting with a friend.

That’s The End!?
Loved this book! If you are going through it at 100 miles an hour and your cruise control refuses to work- this book is for you. Thank you for reaching into my head and saying A L L of the things I feel that I’ve been shouting only to fall upon deaf ears.
I feel completely heard.

Like catching up with your unhinged friend
An easy listen with extremely relatable stories about navigating middle age. The only downpart was that many women were cliche and common suggestions on how to get through this.

Applies to all ages!
Jen Mann captures the life of nearly every woman at some stage. I’ve probably lived through all of them at this point and relived each one as I listened to Midlife Bites. So comforting to know I’m not alone! Laughs and tears. (Sometimes those tears ran down my leg)

Finished in 2 days. Highly recommend for anyone 40+!!
Absolutely hilarious, with a generous sprinkle of truth bombs and f-bombs, mixed with some solid advice. Jen says EVERYTHING us middle aged women are thinking. Every thought I harbor and bite my tongue through is in this gem.

Every Woman
Every woman, young and old, needs to listen to this! It would validate so many of our thoughts and ease many fears/phobias. I’m going to tell my daughter she needs to listen to it and share it with her friends.

Nailed it!
I have followed Jen for many years and enjoyed her blog, books and Facebook group. I was so happy when she announced this newest book about the many issues plaguing most middle aged peri-menopausal women. To be able to hear it narrated in her own hilarious voice was the icing on the cake. I felt like she was giving me a personal pep talk every day on my drive to work. I highly recommend the audible version of the book if you have the spare time to listen -- you won't be disappointed and you will immediately feel like she is in your corner. Thanks Jen - keep it coming!
