AU TEST

In the struggle between warring parents, who will protect the child?

Garry Hartshorn and Softie Monaghan were never love's young dream. Not even on their wedding day.

Softie was sophisticated, a career woman, who owned a nice apartment overlooking St Kilda Beach. Garry had a few rough edges, plus one failed marriage and an assortment of jobs under his belt. But Softie's body clock was ticking, and Garry wanted children....

So they got married and produced the only thing they ever had in common: Matilda.

Now, two years later, their golden-haired child is at the centre of a bitter divorce and custody battle. Both parents insist that her well-being is the only thing they care about. Yet, in truth, Matilda was always the one most likely to become lost.

Matilda is Missing

I took a while getting into this audiobook, but once I got into it, I was hooked. What an ending, totally unexpected. A lovely story, with many truths in it.

Loved It

I am a big fan of this author, some books of course are better than others. My favorite being “I came to say goodbye” this one is probably second. The narrator did a fabulous job, the storyline is so believable and depending on who you are, absolutely relatable.

What just happened?

There are 2 stories going on at the same time and the connection is not obvious. The main story is pretty straight forward but then the parallel story seems parallel but not connected. Then the ending just ends! No explanation or conclusion. I was left wanting a resolution to the secondary story which was much more compelling than the main story.
I love Overington's stories but I was disappointed with the conclusion of this one.

Good story overall, a little confusing at times

Very interesting, not what I expected. got a little confused about a l thr back and forth and some of the background that seemed somewhat unnecessary. There were unexpected twists eventually. Wish there had been more resolution in the end, although that isn't always how life works.

Dissatisfied

I hated the ending. There was no resolution to the main plot and the big why was not answered.

heartbreaking

This book hits close to home. Having recently gone through and still to some degree going through the same thing with my own grandchildren, I can see all sides of the story and how they relate to my own. As in who failed to?? It's just a really good lesson on communication.

worst ending ever

All went well until that horrible ending! Wow, very disappointing and nothing to do with the main story or plot!

Loved the Story and Narrator

I could not stop listening to this book! Ignore the reviews by readers who say they didn’t understand it or didn’t like the ending. Just be aware that it is NOT a mystery or thriller. It’s a fascinating look into marriage, generational differences and family relationships. If you go into it with the right expectations, you’ll love it.

Pretty darn good, possibly outdated

I gave this 5 stars because it was quite well done, and very realistic. It’s been decades since the first time I read in the newspaper about a mother being on the lam with her child(ten), against court orders, because she “knew” that her child had been violated by the father. I clearly remember my feelings at the time, proclaiming that I could never leave a child alone with someone likely to molest them, there was NO WAY.
Times have changed since then, and I’ve had experiences that make my reactions to such proclamations less intense. I’ve known children who have made up abuse, though that is rare and not my first reaction to a child telling about abuse. I’ve found it can be anyone in a pre-verbal child’s life, and therapy for children has advanced a lot since the times this story was set in.

Still it was a well told story that was fair to all characters in the story, which is tricky to accomplish. I enjoyed the unique way it was presented, and how and why the narrator related to the story of Matilda

I’m also partial to this author. I’m working my way through to reading all her books.

not the nest ending

the book itself was great. I personally enjoyed the double story line, although the ending left me with too much to wonder about. I'd give 5 stars had the author given closure to the characters. I feel like it needs a second book to finish their stories.
