Woof.

I don’t know if the translation was off or if this was just that sophomoric, but this was really tough to get through. The female narrator was fine, but the male narrator was awful. Everything he said came out angry, and most of the time that didn’t at all match the scene or the words he was saying. It was so confusing. He took an already unlikable character and made him even worse. Not only did I not care if Clara and Sven got together in the end, but I was hoping against hope that Clara would just dump him and move on - which was obviously never going to happen. I haven’t seen the movie but I really can’t imagine it being worse than this book. Just skip this one. There are SO MANY better romances out there (also this is never funny so it’s not a romcom) that this is just a waste of time.

Surprise!

Seemed half the story was Clara’s grieving the loss of Ben. The “Rom” and “Com” didn’t ring through. I’ll wait for movie.

Message in a bottle/phone

This story has been told before. We know how it must end for what are supposed to be mentally healthy people dealing with ups and downs of life. You have a widow and bitter bachelor who cross paths by chance. It just so happens they fill each others needs; her need to be cherished and loved again and his need for undying love and devotion. It really doesn’t matter how this happens; the instant texting speeds things up and makes it more relatable to the 20 yr olds. The Euro flavor may not make sense to a lot of Americans who never take public transit nor walk: seems silly and unnecessary. The story drags with useless side discussions that supposedly help push the two main characters together but leave me feeling sad…not humored…for these very insecure adults. There’s a lot left out of their meeting because the author doesn’t seem to have much of an imagination. It’s a typical superficial date that leads to physical intimacy but no depth. It’s just a woman dealing with the stages of grief and a guy taking advantage of her. I like that corduroy is used a lot and he notices her shoes. The movie trailer doesn’t seem to improve on the story but helps with added humor and filling in the huge gaps in their dates and discovering one another. The voice acting is okay but awkward because you have a male and female acting the others characters…why make actors try to sound the opposite of what they are? They should have only read for their characters and their characters associates should have been voiced according to gender…since there were two genders available instead of the one in most readings.

Two different stories

I recently watched the movie adaptation of this book and also read the book. However, I found that the two were quite different from each other. I understand that everyone interprets texts differently, which leaves room for creative freedom. However, I was disappointed that the movie didn't stay true to the original story. While I appreciate Hollywood's attempt to take a unique approach, I have concerns about the significant differences between the book and the movie. So, others should not expect the visual version to be the same as the original text.

Performance not great

The female part is somewhat tolerable but male is awful in my opinion. I did finish but it was just meh for me.
