An Astra Militarum Novel

A celebrated sniper of the Astra Militarum must shift her focus to commanding troops, and dealing with the complications that arise from hard decisions.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

It's a look into the haunted thoughts of a soldier wrestling with the complex realities of a galaxy at war. Every choice she makes has consequences for those under her command.

THE STORY

Transplant. Cadian. Sniper. Legend.

Sergeant Darya Nevic is all of these and more… but behind the stories stands a soldier haunted by the unwelcome fame her successes have brought.

During the Cadian 217th’s assault on the manufactorum world of Attruso, Darya finds herself out of her depth in a war that is fought with words as much as with weapons. As a fearsome winter closes in and her men begin to die around her, she will be forced to confront her doubts and make an impossible choice – to become the figurehead her soldiers need, or to believe the unimaginable promises of the mysterious t’au.

With the fate of her regiment in her hands, which path will she choose?

Written by Rob Young. Narrated by Colleen Prendergast. Running time 10 hours and 28 minutes (approx).

boring till 7 hours in

the narrator isn't monotone but has the same inflection for almost every sentence. This gives an impression very similar to a monotone narrator. The story is slow until the end when it gets very good and then just ends.

A really good into what it's like to be a part of a scout sniper squad in the 41st millennium. plenty of action and intrigue to keep the story interesting until the end.

A very good quality story

A good sniper book with plenty of grass-root level characters from Imperium and Tau. Recommended!

Give this one a shot

This is an excellent book if you want a Sniper's story in the 41st Millenium, and an even BETTER book if you want to see a Guard vs. T'au story. Give this book a listen and you won't be disappointed, engaging plotline, good characters, all around a great read.

Great story

Bare bones and straight forward with a few nice twists to boot. Quite enjoyed it.

An interesting sniper story with decent commentary

The tactics of sniping are on full display here and are given in interesting detail. It's very interesting what they do narrative-wise with the story, especially near the end (though I think they could've done more with it). The Tau do kind of make significant blunders near the end that are head-scratching.
Unlike the lazy-brained anonymous reviewer who called the commentary "leftist" I think it shows how both sides of the conflict take advantage of marginalized groups for their own ends. No one is really in the right here. As is common in the setting of 40k.
The narrator was excellent but the thing I have to critique is that shouting by making yourself quieter doesn't really carry the same impact. I did like the voice effects added to simulate radio activity.

Fun exciting story reminiscent of Enemy at the Gates

I have not listened to a lot of Militarum stories, and this was a great one. Very personable, good character development. Lots of twists and turns. The narrator did a great job as well, telling the Sergeant’s point of view and how she thought. It was a great listen.

Another Great Imperial Guard Story

Shades of Gaunts Ghosts, well worth the listen. I'm usually on the fence for books that aren't "known", but I took a chance on this new release. I did not regret it. No story is perfect, but this one IS entertaining. I think I just might break out the paint pots this weekend...

Good story, odd pacing

Overall this is a great read and the narrator does a good job. The pacing is a little off in places and the main character can seem a little unrealistic, but if you view the story as Imperial propaganda, it makes for a really enjoyable read.
