Carmel, a forty year old Irish woman is living a life that’s fine, not exciting or awful, just fine. She has a house, a husband, it’s all ok. She never had kids, but that’s just life, right? She knows she should be grateful. She’s better off than a lot of people. Then one day, out of the blue, she gets a Facebook message, from a total stranger. With information that could transform her life, for better or for much worse.

It could be a scam. It could be malicious. It could be a crazy person. But what if what they say is true? Her finger hovers over the screen. Delete or reply?

I don’t know how anyone who has a kind heart could ever not feel the pain that Carmel felt. And at the end when Jean Grainger tells us why this book was written I felt even worse. She doesn’t mention the woman the book was based on and maybe she never found out. But if she is out there and reads our reviews, I hope she reads how much she is loved by all of us.

Heartbreaking story

As the story begins, Carmel is a very depressing character. I wasn’t sure I was going to like this book. However, a chance connection sets in motion a major change to her life and the tone of the book. At the end of the book, Jean Grainger explains what inspired this story and it made me think about another possibility of why tracing one’s Irish Catholic roots can frequently run into dead ends. The scenario of this book is based on some very dark, quite recent, historical truths. Siobhan Waring nails the accents and voices of the wide variety of characters. I am super impressed by her talents. I cannot wait for the sequels to this book. I hope they are in the queue for Audible release with Siobhan as the narrator.

Superior narrator(s). Loved the characters and their development, this was a good listen.

We hope to get more in the series, it is especially good to listen to on long drives.

Enjoyed Grainger’s story, as always. Pure Irish storytelling at its best, and based on truth.
