Publisher's summary

An Irish country doctor is sickened by all he saw in the First World War. His children are now determined to fight in World War 2. How far can you stretch the ties that bind a family?

In the turbulent and uncertain times of Ireland in 1919, the birth of two children revitalise a small town.

Dr. Richard Buckley returns home to his wife and beloved hometown of Dunderrig, weary and heart-sick over the horror and pointlessness of The Great War.

Soon, trouble is coming from all sides—Richard’s unhappy wife leaves Dunderrig, and a Nazi occupied Europe marches steadily closer to home.

In the blink of an eye, the peace he’d craved and enjoyed since his days on the battlefield are gone.

Meantime, James and Juliet come of age in a world on the brink of chaos, where the remnants of rebellion at home have snowballed into the horrors of yet another world war.

Their father doesn’t see the twins choosing different paths—dangerous paths—that will test everything, including their love for their country, their family, and each other.

Historically rich and moving, the tale of two children from the Irish countryside caught in the throes of wartime Europe is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and its willingness to endure.

Loved it

I have never listened to any of her books that didn’t keep me engaged up to the very end. There were a few slow parts in the beginning but after that I listened every chance I got. It bugs me that my library doesn’t carry any of her books.

NEVER WANTED IT TO END!

What a FANTASTIC BOOK! How I WISH there was a follow-up to this novel, but there doesn’t seem to be. ): I honestly can’t say whether I enjoyed the story or the narrator of this book more. I think this is the first book I’ve ever listened to with a strictly male narrator, but I enjoyed it more than I ever thought possible. The man not only has an extremely pleasant voice, but he has such a gift with accents — English (British), German, and in perfect French.

As always, Ms. Grainger’s book starts off a bit slow, but by Chapter 3, I find myself so engrossed I can’t go anywhere without my phone in my hand or playing in the car. At work, I kept my Bluetooth on and I listened in my hearing aid while working with customers for eight hours and nobody knew but me.

This story was not only heartwarming, but a bit heartbreaking. There was espionage, deep love between family members, and love between people on opposite sides of the war.

With every single Jean Grainger book I read, I say, “THIS was the BEST Jean Grainger book I’ve read yet!” Well, I will say it again about that THIS book! I loved this one everyb

This is my favorite Jean Grainger book so far. Like the strong portrayal of woman characters .

I liked the historical fiction aspect of this book and the portrayal of brave women during both World Wars. The characters were intriguing and realistic. The added romances kept it interesting and added a little spice.

Lovely story

Stick with this book. I had a hard time getting into it and at times it suddenly jumped ahead leaving questions. That seems typical with this author. But the ending was very good and I was happy to have read it.

Another home run!

What I particularly like about this author is how she brings to life the real world experiences of the human beings who lived through the events that she portrays fictitiously. There is a difference between knowing history, and developing a rudimentary understanding of the impact of events on people who lived through it. Jean Grainger provides a gripping storyline that engages us in the lives of people who represent those we will never meet, yet, and to whom, indeed we do owe so much. Skilled, talented narration brings it home.
