Publisher's Summary

Fresh off their victory over Graves and his followers, Marcus and his friends have managed to enjoy a few weeks of relative calm and peace as they continue to build Aldford, preparing the town for a new wave of settlers coming from Eberia. But as the days wear on with no new arrivals in sight, they begin to fear the worse, eventually setting out to search for their promised reinforcements and soon realizing that they weren’t as alone on the frontier as they thought they were.

Just managing to rescue a caravan of settlers in the nick of time from a horde of bandits, Marcus and the rest of Virtus barely have a chance to catch their breath before they find themselves thrust into the middle of Eberian politics, revealing a plot that threatens not only to take away their hard-won independence...but to destroy Aldford completely.

he used the word Azure way too much

I love Luke Daniels he's my favorite narrator but I just couldn't get over how many times you use the word Azure like there's lots of ways to say blue or maybe was even unnecessary he kept saying as your eyes when it was irrelevant.

MC often forgets his own powers.

I was thoroughly enjoying this book. It had humor, action, suspense, political intrigue, and a great game world. I couldn’t put it down until, the author has he MC forget his own powers. It is one of my biggest pet peeves in fantasy. It happens when an author makes his character too powerful and needs to create suspense.
For example the MC has a big battle with an old enemy, and not once did he use his blink step. He went from a badass who blinked across the battle field in previous battles to and idiot who slowly runs up the the bad guy who is fighting his friend. He use to be able to blink in an instant but now instead he gets killed and he deserved it (i understand the pressure of battle may make people react irrationally but his whole schtick is that he and his guild have trained and prepared themselves more than others). I actually no longer wanted him to succeed in the book. He is suppose to be a spell sword, but he almost never uses his spells. Sure he might cast a spell shield, but come on!! Aargh I wanted to actually yell at the author.
It’s lazy and you lost me as a fan.

Great listening

Ok so book two was different and difficult for me to get through but I was pleasantly surprised at how it tied in to this one. I’m definitely going to get book four as soon as it’s released on audible.

Lacks creativity and innovation

When compared to similar titles in this genre, like Awaken Online or Everybody Loves Large Chests, this book plays out like a grind. It probably appeals to WoW players obsessed with stats, but I'm looking for a little more creativity and less "wow, I'm level 19 and can get 10 intelligent points." I also have to laugh a little at some of the ways people act. I mean: a loot bag drops with a hundred people surrounding it and everyone doesn't care and ignores it other than the protagonist? Sorry, but I've played plenty of games, and realistically, it'd be an all-out click-fest to see who can grab what.

Enjoyed the first book

This book was much harder for me to get through. I’m not sure why. I feel like every page was a fight scene. It was just one fight after another. I feel like the story got lost within them. I will probably continue to read the series, because I like to see things through until the end. But this book really dragged for me.
The narrator was excellent.

This is an okay book for fans of the genre

If you just absolutely love the LitRPG genre than this book will be a decent read. The fight scenes drag on a lot, and progress for the plot is slow. However the author does wrap climaxes up well, and develops a lot of the characters pretty well so it was not all bad. I did find myself struggling to finish it however. I will keep the book tho and buy the next one "assuming it is the same story not like the 2nd book". It's just not something I am going to be super excited about.

Narration is fine. Luke Daniels does a good job.

Good but keeps deteriorating

Story is still great but the majority of the book are unnecessarily long action scenes which at least i do not enjoy

azure

The narration was great, and the story was solid if combat-heavy. What was neither great nor solid was the word azure, the overuse of which was genuinely distracting.

Good story and of course a great narrator

I'm really enjoying this series. Book 1.5 threw me for a bit of a loop, but it tied in with this one, so I'm glad I listened to it. The Story really ramps up toward the end with a great climactic ending. Luke does a good job of balancing story with LitRPG elements and doesn't overwhelm the listener with stat sheet updates

Fantasy at it's most exciting!!!

I've really enjoyed this audiobook, perhaps more than any other thus far! This book builds on the previous two and the amount of action and intriguing storylines is extremely well written. Definitely the best book so far, you can tell the author is really getting to grips with his characters and storytelling craft. I was hooked after the first hour and it goes from strength to strength. I can't wait until the next instalment, hopefully we won't have to wait long!

Fantastic follow-up!

Great story and very well narrated. Probably the best in the series so far. Would definitely recommend reading book '2' first despite it being a side story as it adds a lot of depth to new main characters in this book.

"At the speed of thought"

Good storyline. very light on actual game mechanics compared to other LitRPGs I have read. Book 2 seems to have nothing to do with the main storyline, at least so far. However the author just seeing to stop using the phrase "At the speed of though". He seriously uses it at least once per chapter 😒

Thought this was awesome. Can't wait for the next one.
Characters engaging and the RPG elements dont detract for the the immersiveness of the story. Not to mention Main Character is easy to identify with.
