They have always scared him in the past - the Rangers, with their dark cloaks and shadowy ways. The villagers believe the Rangers practice magic that makes them invisible to ordinary people. And now 15-year-old Will, always small for his age, has been chosen as a Ranger's apprentice. What he doesn't yet realize is that the Rangers are the protectors of the kingdom. Randold, better known as Rand, was no ordinary individual. Despite his best efforts, he possessed an extraordinary secret—he was a Super. Well, technically speaking, he belonged to that exceptional group, but he concealed his true nature from the world. For Rand possessed a remarkable ability to manipulate all forms of energy, even the Superpowers of others, a power that, if discovered, would undoubtedly land him in dire trouble with the government. Publisher's summary
They are outcasts. Hal, Stig, and the others - they are the boys the others want no part of. Skandians, as any reader of Ranger's Apprentice could tell you, are known for their size and strength. Not these boys. Yet that doesn't mean they don't have skills. And courage - which they will need every ounce of to do battle at sea against the other bands, the Wolves and the Sharks, in the ultimate race. The icy waters make for a treacherous playing field - especially when not everyone thinks of it as playing.
John Flanagan, author of the international phenomenon Ranger's Apprentice, creates a new cast of characters to populate his world of Skandians and Araluens, a world millions of young readers and listeners around the world have come to know and admire. Full of seafaring adventures and epic battles, Book 1 of The Brotherband Chronicles is sure to thrill fans of Ranger's Apprentice while enticing a whole new generation just now discovering the books.

The assassination of heroes was once a warning... for an invasion that nearly destroyed the world. Nations were slaughtered, cities were erased from existence, and defending armies were crushed into oblivion. In weeks, all life stood on the verge of extinction. But the end did not come. Instead the black horde vanished, leaving terrified survivors... and rumors. As the centuries passed the holocaust faded into legend, and finally myth. Across the southern sea a gifted young man is completing his training.

just as good as rangers apprentice
I wondered if the author would be able to separate this story from rangers apprentice and he did with no problem. having the same narrator made it hard to separate the stories but he is such a good narrator, he pulled it up off. starting book 2 now!

O the Sea!
Maybe I it's the draw of the open ocean! Though both are different, this series rivals the ranger series... Keating has hit his stride with this series!

I’m a fan
This was another great beginning of Mr. Flannigan‘s Wonderful world of youth coming of age. I love his attention to detail both of Tasks and characters. This is a perfect divergence from the excellent Rangers Apprentice.

very well done
I never read the Ranger's Apprentice series, but watched it circulate heavily in my library. I chose to start with Brotherband Chronicles as I was browsing new releases in Audible for my commute (I hook my Kindle up) and decided it was time to see what the craze was about. I have to say the storytelling was great and I look forward to downloading the next one.
