Story
Jack Reacher was alone, the way he liked it, soaking up the hot, electric New York City night, watching a man cross the street to a parked Mercedes and drive it away. The car contained one million dollars in ransom money. And Edward Lane, the man who paid it, will pay even more to get his family back. Lane runs a highly illegal soldiers-for-hire operation. He will use any amount of money and any tool to find his beautiful wife and child. And then he’ll turn Jack Reacher loose with a vengeance - because Reacher is the best man hunter in the world.

Former military cop Jack Reacher makes it all the way from snowbound South Dakota to his destination in northeastern Virginia, near Washington, D.C.: the headquarters of his old unit, the 110th MP. The old stone building is the closest thing to a home he ever had. Reacher is there to meet - in person - the new commanding officer, Major Susan Turner, so far just a warm, intriguing voice on the phone. But it isn’t Turner behind the CO’s desk. And Reacher is hit with two pieces of shocking news, one with serious criminal consequences, and one too personal to even think about.

Story
"You can leave the army, but the army doesn’t leave you. Not always. Not completely," notes Jack Reacher - and sure enough, the retired military cop is soon pulled back into service. This time, for the State Department and the CIA. Someone has taken a shot at the president of France in the City of Light. The bullet was American. The distance between the gunman and the target was exceptional. How many snipers can shoot from three-quarters of a mile with total confidence? Very few, but John Kott - an American marksman gone bad - is one of them...

Publisher's Summary
Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: You got the wrong guy. Then he says: Get Reacher for me. And sure enough, from the world he lives in - no phone, no address, no commitments - ex–military investigator Jack Reacher is coming. In Lee Child’s astonishing new thriller, Reacher’s arrival will change everything - about a case that isn’t what it seems, about lives tangled in baffling ways, about a killer who missed one shot - and by doing so give Jack Reacher one shot at the truth.…
The gunman worked from a parking structure just 30 yards away - point-blank range for a trained military sniper like James Barr. His victims were in the wrong place at the wrong time. But why does Barr want Reacher at his side? There are good reasons why Reacher is the last person Barr would want to see. But when Reacher hears Barr’s own words, he understands. And a slam-dunk case explodes. Soon Reacher is teamed with a young defense lawyer who is working against her D.A. father and dueling with a prosecution team that has an explosive secret of its own. Like most things Reacher has known in life, this case is a complex battlefield. But, as always, in battle, Reacher is at his best.
Moving in the shadows, picking his spots, Reacher gets closer and closer to the unseen enemy who is pulling the strings. And for Reacher, the only way to take him down is to know his ruthlessness and respect his cunning - and then match him shot for shot….

Excellent Work of Adventure Fiction
A man arrested for a mass killing has only one thing to say to his own lawyer; find Jack Reacher. Since Reacher does an excellent job of staying off the grid it's not gonna be an easy task. Unless of course Reacher decides to come to them; with a message his lawyer and his sister don't want to hear. The suspect; having been assaulted inside the lockup where he was being held, is in a coma and unable to provide any explanations.
The mistakes in form here are legion. The book has the prisoner being held in prison rather than in the local jail. Child also has him being exposed to the general prison population; something not done with a suspect in a high profile criminal case for that very reason.
Then with the case dead and the suspect in a coma someone makes a mistake; they go after Jack Reacher. Those of us who are loyal fans of Reacher know this isn't just a mistake; it's a huge mistake. Along the way Reacher does what he always does, he kicks, uh, butt and takes names; he has sex with a woman once and she goes on her way, and finally; he unravels a case that one else can.
With that one exception mentioned earlier this story avoids some of the major holes in logic and fact that are commonplace in some selections in the series. Some of the villains are more than a little over the top here but they play well in the story. If you're a Reacher fan this one is a must.

saw movie first; got book to get deeper
Would you listen to Jack Reacher: One Shot again? Why?
Yes, This book was a good, well written detective novel with the unparalleled Jack Reacher as a distinct and singular good guy with a real mean streak.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
I couldn't put it down, I was at a birthday party for my son's friend and just kept listening to the book. It was a bit anti- social but I wanted to finish.
What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Dick brought the characters to life for me. He gave them depth and breadth.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
no. It was just enjoyable. I love a book that makes me want to come back to it.

Get Reacher For Me!
This was my first introduction to the Reacher novels. I had read the Reader's Digest abridged version about 7 years ago and when I saw that audible had the unabridged version, I had to get it because the story had stayed with me and wanted to know more about it.
This storyline is good... six shots fired and five people are dead but the target is only one. The story is somewhat complex and involved but Reacher unravels the complexity. Reacher uses his instincts, experience and military investigative training to get to the bottom of the who and why of this story.
The accused asked for Reacher because he knows that Reacher will not stop until the case is solved and the villain brought to justice. Reacher and the accused know each other because they were in military at the same time for a brief period. However, Reacher is not a friend of the accused. He thinks the accused is guilty but the accused sister continually begs him to help her brother. As usual, the story develops in a way that tweeks Reacher's instincts.
I have read several of the Reacher novels. I have purposefully not read those which were not narrated by Dick Hill. To me, Dick Hill is the voice of Jack Reacher and yes, I can tell his voice is older in the latest novels but I can overlook because he is still very, very good... His performance is still among the very best I've heard and I have listened to many novels... Highly Recommend

Tom Cruise is no Jack Reacher
What did you love best about Jack Reacher: One Shot?
Another really good Jack Reacher novel. There were the don't piss off Jack, the every woman loves a man with scars, the fooled me again, the shrelock holmesish dectective analysis, and the military moments, with only one (spoiler alert) "come on, that many Russians wouldn't stand out in middle america moment."
This is the book that the movie was based on. The movie introduced me to the Character, which got me to read books 1 - 8. I liked Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher, until I read books 1 - 8. After reading this book I watched the movie again and thought the book adaptation was great, the filming was great, but the casting director must have been smoking crack.

The book is better than the movie (surprised?)
At first I was thinking that purchasing this book was a poor value since I had already seen the movie. However, after reading it (and because Tom Cruise is not really Jack Reacher), of course this book was different than the movie, and better.
If you like the Reacher series, you'll not be disappointed.
What will I do with my Reacher addiction after I have read all of them? *sigh*

Not sure why narrator won an award for this
Decent plot line. No better or worse than any of the previous Jack Reacher books, which is to say it is pretty darn good. Unfortunately this was my least favorite performance by Dick Hill so far as narrator. He often sounded like he was have trouble controlling his breathing. Some of his female voices sounded pretty weird too. I much preferred the previous narrator. In the end though it was still an enjoyable listen.

Reacher said nothing....
If I never hear the sentance "Reacher said nothing" or "he said nothing" ever again, it would be too soon. Im half way into the book, and Ive probably heard that sentance 200 times now, and the repetition is really starting to tick me off...
Another thing that really starts to annoy me, is how the narrater constantly keeps biting off the words. It makes it abit stressfull to listen to in the long run...
