“Rick Mofina’s books are edge-of-your-seat thrilling. Page-turners that don’t let up.”
—Louise Penny, #1 New York Times bestselling author

Three girls go into the woods, but only one comes out…

Driving alone at night in a wild rainstorm, Luke Conway strikes something—or someone. He and his wife, Carrie, recently moved back to Clear River to help take care of her ailing father, and after a tragedy at his previous job, this move is their last chance at a new life. Now, standing in the downpour on this Texas road, Luke, an off-duty cop, has a decision to make—and he has to make it fast.

No one else is around. No witnesses. And he can’t find a body.

Wanting to believe he’s being paranoid, that he’s just seeing things, Luke panics and leaves, deciding not to report the incident but rather to secretly investigate it. He can’t put more stress on Carrie, who’s already haunted by the unsolved attack and murder of two teenage girls that happened years ago in Clear River, a horrific crime in which she was the sole survivor. The killer has not been found, but Carrie and Luke’s anguished search for answers will slowly reveal the horrific truth.

I didn’t like that. It was almost like the other book. I just read of his. Very predictable, same scenario a kidnapping a food in a cellar . I just feel that a writer needs to be more creative, I get when a book works people and people buy a lot, but don’t keep doing the same thing.

The repetitiveness

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys crime fiction thrillers! It’s a page turner for sure!

A LOT OF TWISTS!! Just when you think you know who did it, It changes!!

I have listened to several of Rick Mofina’s books, and they never disappoint. This storyline is so intriguing and even on a cruise, I finished it in a day and a half! I was definitely surprised by the outcome. Highly recommend.

Couldn’t Stop Listening

I thought it was okay, but the last hour or so is just super rushed and all of Joyce’s dialogue is poorly written, it just kind of ruined the book. The southern accent of the narrator is also just kind of goofy. I think it has really good potential, and I think if there was another hour or so to really add to the ending it could’ve been really good.

Fell off towards the end

Excellent plot! As a criminal defense attorney in Texas, the author was spot on in many aspects. The narrator was excellent. I appreciated that the accents were not too corny, and the settings were realistic. Well done. Kept me guessing!

Just as good as Grisham!

The characters were not likable and the twist was lackluster. The performer did not have a good Texan accent, and went in and out of using it for the same character(s).

Really wanted to like it

Mofina is normally on point, but this was the worst. narrator voice or attempt to be suspenseful is forced. But mainly the innerdialogue from each character is so odd. Save your credit

Confusingly terrible

I really wanted to enjoy this novel, but it was hard to get past some glaring inaccuracies. The author really should have done more research—police do not release crime scene photos, and any investigative material that does get released is heavily redacted, with names, addresses, and personal details removed. Because these basic procedures were ignored, the plot never felt believable.

On top of that, none of the characters were particularly likable or compelling. I kept waiting for someone to stand out, but everyone felt flat or irritating in their own way.

The only thing that kept me going was the narration. The writing style itself was smooth, engaging, and easy to listen to—unfortunately, it was wrapped around a story that didn’t hold up.

Will not be reading another novel by this author
