"Mofina's books are edge-of-your seat thrilling." (Louise Penny, number one New York Times best-selling author)

"A gifted storyteller." (Library Journal)

A missing daughter, a family with secrets, a race for the truth....

At a truck stop near Las Vegas, 14-year-old Riley Jarrett vanishes from her family’s RV, turning their cross-country dream of starting over into a nightmare.

Investigators have their work cut out for them. The massive, bustling truck plaza in the desert is the perfect place for someone to disappear - or be taken.

Detectives pursue every chilling lead as all eyes fall to the newly blended family with a tragic past. With the clock ticking down on the likelihood that Riley’s alive, suspicions run deep. Everyone - from Riley’s mom to her stepdad to her stepbrother and her ex-boyfriend - has something to hide. And their secrets could prove deadly.

More predictable and lack luster narration

After listening to the whole Reed-Sydowski series, written years ago by Mofina, I was excited to buy credits and listen to one more, especially since it was placed in San Diego, where I live. I appreciate Mofina’s inclusion of local neighborhoods, streets and landmarks on his But this book….I finished it but having serious issues with the plot being somewhat predictable and yet giving us that delightful run around (I do like red herrings, believe me, but not when I already know who the culprit is.)
And the narration was inconsistent (especially when the dialogues a involved many voices,) and just didn’t do it for me. The mothers voice was particularly annoying (the intonation, the dramatics.)

I’ll try other RM books, hoping that they lean more towards the Reed-Syd series.

Takes a while to get going; narrator sucks!

If you can make it thru the first 24 chapters (90+ total) you'll enjoy this one. The story doesn't seem to go anywhere until chapter 25; even though I'd figured out the plot line in about chapter 2!

Additionally, the narrator's mind-numbing, plodding, monotone interpretation of the lead male detective (and other male characters) left me contemplating smashing my head against the wall! It wasn't until I increased the playback speed to 130% that I could stand to continue listening.

Gotta say that I was suspicious, but never really saw the ending coming. Nice twist.

Twists, Turns and Red Herrings...

This is another very good standalone book by Rick Mofina. Mofina’s background as a crime reporter certainly gives his stories a feeling of authenticity. For the most part this book is believable with a few exceptions where the police investigation is concerned. However because it sounds unbelievable to me, it probably is a true event!

I would like to express my condolences to Wayne (Matthews, NC). I’ve been checking his page regularly for the past five months with no change in the # of books rated I feared my favorite book reviewer had come down with COVID. I am relieved to find out that he is well but very sorry for his tragedy. Please know that although I don’t know you except through your reviews, you are highly respected and believe it or not a bright spot in my life every time I read one of your reviews.
Be well.

OMG OMG

Don't get me wrong there were quite a few times where you'll probably want to pull your hair out or scream a little, but My God!! What a wild ride!!! Just when you think you got it figured out....BAM! Another twist!!
No spoilers here, but I'll just say, in extremely picky when it comes to my choice of books. Mystery/Thriller/Suspense is my genre of choice and this has probably become one of my top 5 of the past couple years.

Search for something else.

Not up to the standards of other Rick Mofina books. Long, repetitive, sob story. Not one character elicits sympathy or interest. Truly a dull, boring story. Pass it by.

Seriously

I usually enjoy Rick Mofina's book but this one just didn't do it for me. The police were not that bright, the family was a mess and the constant cliff hanger paragraphs grew annoying. The dialogue was stilted sometimes and it was hard to get through. I was disappointed by this book and was glad when it was done. The narrator was ok but maybe could have used someone with a bit more passion in her voice.

Manipulative storytelling

First of all, I did finish this book and I was curious and invested in the characters and the mystery.

However: I have never read (or listened to) a story told in such a manipulative manner to drag the mystery out. It seems lazy and amateurish for the author to have to resort to such tactics.
There are SO many red herrings in this book - everyone is keeping a secret or acting suspiciously, and the reader is told just enough to think maybe this is the solution to the mystery (or no maybe this is, no it must be him.....). There are also too many "right place at the right time" type coincidences to make other characters look guilty. Each chapter seems to end with a contrived cliffhanger like "she couldn't believe what she was hearing" or "then they watched the video!" at which time POV jumps for the next 2 chapters leaving the reader in annoyed suspense. The characters keep conveniently not having their phones, or deciding not to answer them, so that even the most basic necessary information can't be communicated. If my daughter were missing I know I would not miss any calls!

The detectives in this story are the worst detectives ever...they keep coming up with illogical theories and running with them. When they have a suspect in custody and have badgered him for "hours" with no response, then he starts to talk, they keep interrupting him to argue and insult him. They immediately start treating the family as suspects instead of the best source of information about Riley's disappearance.
