Publisher's summary
An unnerving tale of self-absorption and deception by short-story master Tobias Wolff.
Three friends are leaving the suburbs of Spokane on a hunting trip. Kenny is the prankster, harsh and mean. Frank is laid-back and full of idealism. Tub is overweight, sensitive, and the brunt of everyone's jokes. Searching for tracks in the snow, the trio has little luck until they spot a set of deer prints heading into a nearby farm. Kenny, desperate for a token of their difficult journey, insists that they ask the farmer's permission to hunt on his land. But as they set out in the fading sunlight, things go terribly wrong and what appears to be an accident becomes more and more questionable as strange events call each man's character into question.

The 13 chapters of The Art of War, each devoted to one aspect of warfare, were compiled by the high-ranking Chinese military general, strategist, and philosopher Sun-Tzu. In spite of its battlefield specificity, The Art of War has found new life in the modern age, with leaders in fields as wide and far-reaching as world politics, human psychology, and corporate strategy finding valuable insight in its timeworn words.

Story
It’s the summer of ’77 in New York City, and the only thing more unnerving than the scorching heatwave is the rampant murder, leaving washed-up homicide detective Richard Dietrich on edge. When Dietrich investigates a brutal mob hit the brass doesn’t want him to solve, he goes from phoning it in to getting in over his head. Caught up in a mysterious second homicide with an even more perplexing perpetrator, Dietrich starts to second guess his instincts—and his memory—as he searches for answers at the bottom of a bottle.

Luxury villas on hot white sand, views for miles over turquoise water. Flawless hostess Penny gathers guests to an island for her husband’s birthday celebrations. But she soon regrets inviting self-obsessed Eloise. When a child vanishes on the night of the party, their perfect island weekend is ripped apart. Even paradise harbours murky secrets… Has he been taken? Has he drowned? In the panic to find any trace, Penny casts about for someone to blame—even if that person is her own daughter, Rosie. Story
The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms. As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts. She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.'

Story
When the call came it seemed like the answer to my prayers. My career as a voice actor had been over for months and me and my little girl Scarlet were living back at my mum’s place. I felt like a failure professionally—and with Scarlet having problems at school, as a parent as well. So, when I was asked to narrate a new book by disappeared novelist Philippa Roberts I jumped at the chance, even if it meant leaving Scarlet with my ex, Hugo, for a few weeks. Hugo, with his perfect new home and his perfect new girlfriend Saskia. But this isn’t a dream come true. It’s a nightmare.

A story of siblings and faith from short-story master Tobias Wolff. Frances has always been protective of her younger brother Frank. Meticulous, funny, eccentric - Mary has always been mindful of the complex role she plays as a professor of history. Her lectures are carefully written out beforehand; her departmental loyalties ambiguous. She is so careful, in fact, that she began to see herself as flat, dull, and lifeless. The closing of Brandon College, the institution she'd spent more than fifteen years at, changes everything. Forced to find another position, Mary finds herself at an experimental college in rainy Oregon.

Crazy story
This is a crazy story of friends who go hunting and one shoots another one and the others say they are taking him to the hospital but they keep stopping to get drinks and share their life issues along the way. It was entertaining. The story was good. The narration was okay but with this narrator it sounded like it was a book about or for old ladies instead of manly hunters. I'm sorry but a couple of them sounded gay and I don't think they were supposed to. Other than that, I enjoyed it.

Dark and Wild Ride!
This is a very interesting story indeed. It brings new meaning to the word “hunters,” that’s for sure. I feel as if there is a darker purpose with one of the characters…hence my review title and the last 40 seconds of the story.

Interesting
My first foray into Mr. Wolff. I wasn’t sure what to expect for that reason and that there is only so much that can be done in a story of this length.
Basically, it’s a study in self-absorption and of how we may not really know our friends. You can see basically how it will end almost from the start. Characters are well drawn and the style keeps you interested.
I’m not a hunter, but these are among the last three people I would ever want to go with if I was.
Narrator sounds like he has mic fright and drank way too much coffee before he started. Still, he handles the different voices well.

Narrator is the problem
Heald tends to mumble words toward the end of sentences and his voice drops off. I listened to several of Wolff's short stories, and most of the time I missed the endings. Like --what? What did he just say? And suddenly it was the next short story. If you can't enunciate, don't be a reader.
