Publisher's summary

Orphaned at an early age, the young girl Heidi finds a home high in the Swiss Alps with her reclusive grandfather. There, each glorious day is filled with discovery, adventure and the friendship of a gentle goat boy, Peter. But when Heidi is sent away from her mountain paradise to a large, cold city, she is determined to find a way to return to the place she loves.

For generations, children around the world have fallen under the spell of this small alpine girl. Heidi is the heartwarming story of an exuberant child’s goodness, courage, and love. Filled with unforgettable characters and majestic scenery, it is an enduring classic of children’s literature.

Author Johanna Spyri lived her entire life in a small Swiss town near Zurich. Heidi, first published in 1881, is a largely autobiographical work that echoes Ms. Spyri’s affection for the countryside, flowers and animals that surrounded her. John McDonough brings Heidi vibrantly to life, enriching this beloved tale with the warmth and drama of his narration.

Wonderful Narration of a Beautiful Story

Listened to this version with my kids. The narrator sounds like the Alm-uncle, or Heidi’s grandfather is telling us the story.
Having only seen the movie as a child, I was surprised and delighted that this is such a heartfelt, sincere, and Christ-centered book about redemption, community, love and forgiveness. It was enjoyed by my 4 kids (ages 9 and under) and equally enjoyed by me!

Absolutely WONDERFUL!!!!

This was indeed a pleasant listen of a movie that I watched as a child... or was it the book that I read? Either way, this audiobook is my absolute favourite rendition of the story. A story excellently written a equally excellently narrated.

I could hardly pause my listening pleasure, but alas, I had to sleep, and so finished it in two days. Love, agony, kindness, sadness, loneliness, jealousy, forgiveness, joy, and peace: family life lessons to treasure. I'm saving this one for my daughter! Well done team!

A book that will uplift your soul

How often in all of media have you found some thing so pure, so good, so innocent and yet entertaining, educational, and uplifting all at the same time? This is one of the greatest books I’ve ever heard in my entire life. I was concerned that I would not be able to keep my full attention since there was only one voice reading the whole time but he did a fantastic job. I know I want to go see if I can find a dramatic version of it. Now that I’ve seen the movies, I realize they don’t even hold a candle to the story, the actual story. Every film that I’ve ever seen cuts out the faith aspect which is at the very foundation of the entire book. This book is not overtly preachy for those of you that are worried about that. However, The faith of the grandmother is so uplifting and encouraging, but you cannot help but join Heidi in absorbing the light of God into your own life. I actually think I will read this book again. You can tell that the author had an appreciation for the wisdom Of the elderly. For me, Christ’s Image is reflected in Heidi. The selfless love that she has 42 elderly ladies and one elderly man is contagious in a wonderful way. So many of us in society neglect to think about those in their sunset years. I believe this is a Faith in action book. It is wholesome, pure, and altogether good. It’s a treasure in literature

A Beautiful, Pure Story

Besides the Bible, this is my very favorite book. Such pure generosity of love flows from our Father and He is acknowledged throughout. My all time favorite narrator, John McDonough, tells the story perfectly with his always kind delivery.

Simply Good

Classic books were usually written in a simpler time. The story is simpler to follow, the characters aren't complicated and the author's message isn't disguised. Heidi is a classic.
