Nellie Cavendish has very good reasons to seek out her roots-and not only because she has no memory of her mother, and hardly knew the father who left her upbringing to paid caregivers. In the eight years since her 21st birthday, very odd things have begun to happen. Crows gather near her wherever she goes, electronics short out when she touches them, and when she's upset, really upset, it storms. At first, she chalked up the unusual happenings to coincidence, but that explanation doesn't begin to cover the vivid nightmares that torment her.

Publisher's Summary
New York Times bestselling author Kay Hooper returns with the new novel in her riveting Bishop/SCU series.
How do you make peace with the dead if the dead aren’t ready to forgive? In New York Times bestselling author Kay Hooper’s new novel, the answer lies in the twisting shadows of a small town, and its secrets yet unearthed....
When Deacon James’s younger sister Melanie calls him, terrified, he goes to her aid in the small Georgia town of Sociable. What he finds is a scared young woman in the grip of what she insists is a paranormal nightmare—and murder. Two local men have been killed under mysterious circumstances. And Melanie is the prime suspect.
Trinity Nichols left a high-stress job for quiet, small-town life. But news of the murders has left her—and the town—on edge, especially when there is nothing remotely ordinary about how the men died. And her investigation is yielding more than she bargained for, including a group of strangers who have descended on Sociable, some with abilities Trinity finds hard to believe, and agendas she refuses to trust. For some reason, they know a lot more than they should about what’s happening in town. And what’s happening is growing stranger by the minute.

Kept getting cheesier and cheesier
While I enjoyed the narration and performance for the most part, the story line really left a lot to be desired. About a third of the way into the book, I found myself thinking more and more about giving up entirely. The fanciful elements turned into downright absurd. I have no issue with bringing the concept of the supernatural into a story, but I think it got to the point where literally every main character -- and most of the secondary ones -- had a host of psychic abilities. Even the dog. It just got to be over the top. The premise for why strange things were occurring in Sociable was not compelling, nor was the final throw down between "good vs. evil." I didn't find the primary heroine, Hollis, to be particularly likeable or convincing. Rather, just...whiney. (For fun, I started counting how many times the narrator said "Hollis sighed....")
The story snd character development started off fairly decently, but that's the best I can say...other than the fact that the author prominently features a pitbull and does so in a positive light. Being a pitbull owner myself, that was arguably my favorite part of the story -- and the most realistic. Glad I got this book on a deal.

Typical Hooper - A book you can use to multitask
If you know Kay Hooper, you know the Bishop series. It's the same formula. You pretty much know what's going to happen and who it's going to happen to. This particular book had a lack of climax. I was still waiting for something to excite and surprise me. I was left with a feeling of disappointment. Still, it's a good series and have read them all. Narrator was good and can differentiate the characters, which makes it easier to keep track of everyone. There are always a lot of characters (sometimes unnecessary).
Overall, good book, good author and good narrator for a book you don't have to concentrate on.
