2.0 out of 5 stars Basically good plot, often hard to follow, excessive introspection, strange epilogue

The plot is basically good. I finished the book.

However, the book was often hard to follow. I reread some parts of the book several times. There was way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way too much introspection about psychic powers.

A highly inappropriate and completely irrelevant epilogue about the woes of shelter dogs and black pit bulls, could have cost the book two points in my rating all by itself. Mind, I agree with everything she said, and I like pit bulls. It was very inappropriate, and completely out of place. And, there was a statement that Brabant (the sentient dog) in the book became what Brabant needed to. Nothing about the story needed for us to know that the author is a new age Celtic ditz! We really didn't need to know that.

Women are disappearing by twos and are found dead after being tortured for over a month in the Blue Ridge Mountains of South Carolina. The seventh victim is male. Sociable, Georgia's own town playboy Scott Abernathy's body is found is crumpled at the foot of his bed with his neck broken.

Trinity Nichols, Sheriff finds his body (with the help of her dog Braden)locked in his bedroom in his apartment. None of his neighbors even suspected he was dead. Trinity calls in The SCU. Deacon James, Hollis Templeton and Reese DeMarco show up to help.

The only clue who the killer might be is a small silver cross found in Scott's mouth. That cross connects him to the 6 women missing/murdered in South Carolina.

HAUNTED brings to a conclusion several long running storylines in the Special Crimes Unit series. While authors and publishers might want a book that can be completely enjoyed by old and new readers, I prefer books where continuing stories where the characters and stories increase in complexity even at the risk of alienating new readers. HAUNTED was immensely satisfying because it rewards committed readers with some resolution on the story of Hollis Templeton.

THE STORY: FBI Agent Deacon James' sister has her ex murdered and some suspect that she was involved so she calls her brother for support and he comes to the small town of Sociable. Deacon is one of the Special Crimes Unit agents because he possesses a paranormal talent. When he arrives, he meets with Trinity Nichols, the sheriff, and Deacon soon finds himself involved in the middle of a series of murders. Hollis Templeton and Reese DeMarco are soon also on the scene sent to help with the investigation. It turns out this case may be connected to the longtime enemy of the SCU who is supposed to be dead.

OPINION: While HAUNTED is billed in its blurb as the story of Deacon and Trinity, in fact, they are only supporting characters. This is really Hollis' book. Since she was introduced in such a horrific way in TOUCHING EVIL, Hollis and her expanding abilities have been a recurring storyline in the series. In this book, Hollis finally has to confront her past and it finally feels that she is on the road to building a better life for herself. This book also brings to a resolution the story of Samuel which has been a part of the series for several trilogies now. I really enjoyed this book because I felt that there was real focus on the characters, especially Hollis and Reese. The suspense plot was not particularly compelling apart from the angst of Hollis.

WORTH MENTIONING: There are some small updates on characters introduced in previous books including Diana and Quentin. The updates are small but are nice for longtime readers.

FINAL DECISION: I really enjoyed this book because I finally felt that Hollis' story progressed. Hollis and Reese make a nice couple and I was happy that their story has not been dropped. For fans of the series, this is a payoff after a long buildup of several stories and it felt complete and satisfying.

CONNECTED BOOKS: HAUNTED is the fifteenth book in the Bishop/Special Crimes Unit series. I think it is best read by those who have followed the other books in the series because many past stories come to a conclusion here.

STAR RATING: I rate this one a 4.5 because I liked how Hollis' story progressed.

I love the Bishop series! I can't get enough. If you haven't read any of them, please consider it. You won't regret it. I didn't read them in order, as each book is its own story, so you don't feel you have to start at "the beginning." If you like psychological horror/murder mysteries and the psychic realm, you will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this series! No regrets! Well, my only regret is Kay Hooper can't write them fast enough. hahahaha

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding novel and Hollis comes into her own!

I really enjoyed this latest SCU novel. I think it is important that all of the previous books be read first. Otherwise, many of the subtle changes and plot developments may be confusing or not understood. This book brings Hollis even further along and her story alone is worth the ride. The book is intricately plotted, the pacing is excellent, and the character definition is on point. Trinity and Braden are just great and I hope to see more of them in books to come. Excellent novel and I highly recommend!

I have read all of Kay Hooper's books. The " Bishop" books are such great reading. I read a lot, so I don't always remember the previous book in a series, but Ms. Hooper does a great job of incorporating enough from the previous book that my memory kicks in.
Hollis is pretty amazing, and Reese is a great partner for her. It was pretty cool that Deacon is part of this special group as well as being Melanie's brother. Trinity and Braden...so cool! I really enjoyed reading this book. My husband and I had dinner plans, and I hated having to turn my Kindle off so I could get ready and go to dinner. As soon as we got home I turned on my Kindle and was once again immersed in this story. I am looking forward to the next book in this series. Thanks to Kay Hooper for a lot of hours of happy reading!
