Publisher's summary

Police procedurals go supernatural in this gritty urban fantasy debut by Michael F. Haspil in Graveyard Shift.

Alex Menkaure, former pharaoh and mummy, and his vampire partner, Marcus, born in ancient Rome, are vice cops in a special Miami police unit. They fight to keep the streets safe from criminal vampires, shape-shifters, bootleg blood dealers, and anti-vampire vigilantes.

When poisoned artificial blood drives vampires to murder, the city threatens to tear itself apart. Only an unlikely alliance with former opponents can give Alex and Marcus a fighting chance against an ancient vampire conspiracy.

If they succeed, they'll be pariahs, hunted by everyone. If they fail, the result will be a race war bloodier than any the world has ever seen.

Vampires and humans living in harmony?

Not quite!
This was a fun, easy listen police procedural with vampires, werewolves with a reincarnated mummy as the lead detective.
Lots of blood, gore, some gratuitous and graphic sex.
What was disappointing was the character development and back stories were lacking, just a taste of who these ancients were.
I hope the writer will continue the story and show us the history.
Excellent narration by Michael Kramer.

Over My Head

I'm sort of embarrassed to say this, but I got confused as to who was whom and what they were and what they said.
I love vampires, shape-shifters and urban fantasy is one of my absolute favorite genres. But I really got lost with these characters and what was happening. Not so great for urban fantasy that needs more grounding in urban in order for the fantasy part to work.
I found that reading the reviews made this book way more interesting and clear. I better understood the traits and background of the characters, as well as a better understanding of the plot.
One of the biggest reasons I got this book was because Michael Kramer is the narrator. I absolutely adored him from the Felix Castor series. But here, his wonderful sardonic quality was missing and instead was kind of muddled with undistinguishable accents.

The book was very graphic all the way through.

Listen to it on Audible. The narrator does a fantastic job. It's like this book was written for him. Thoroughly enjoyed the book overall. Great storyline, characters and Haspil did a fantastic job creating a world for them. Can't wait for the sequel!

This novel rips

Fantastic narration. A truly unique story with lots of intrigue. For some reason my mind started thinking about the story arc being like a narrative dungeons and dragons game but set in the modern day. I hope it becomes a series

an original take on Vampires

with as many vampire stories it is difficult to come up with something that hasn't been done to death. Haspil has a amazing amount of talent.

Gritty, gory, glorious

This was like True Blood meets Miami Vice, but minus the pulp and double the Reservoir Dogs “cross and double cross” mentality. This was a long, hard-boiled build up to a phenomenal final hour. I had to pay attention to all the characters and plots, and conspiracies both current and past. And I admit I got a little lost sometimes. But, the edgy noir chemistry between ancient vampire detective Marcus and his sometimes partner and frenemy Alex “smells like the dead” Menkaure was captivating.

There were minor issues that in no way would stop me from getting a sequel, should one ever appear. The back stories could have used a lot more filling in, especially to set up the eventual reunion with another ancient. I had that Avengers moment of hoping they’d explain why they remember Budapest differently, but no, none of their past missions (including the one in Budapest) get explained. Instead, there’s a half dozen locations mentioned and then ignored, presenting so many missed opportunities to develop Marcus and Alex’s complicated past. Finally, I enjoy narrator Kramer, but 1) his female voices are cringe and 2) I can’t stop hearing Dalinar, Saddius and the rest of the Way of Kings cast.

I don't get it

This book is so disappointing, because the premise is there. It sounds like a winner, but it just isn't. This is the second credit I have wasted on a lame book in a matter of days. I am five hours in and I don't think I can take another five. It is just not worth my time.
First of all, there are scenes in this book that should be exciting, but they just aren't. The narrator is spotty, he does some voices well and some he doesn't at all. It is almost comical. I can't tell you how many times I had to rewind, cause the book just couldn't hold my attention and at this point - five hours in - I don't care about any of the characters. It is a mystery to me, where all these good reviews come from.

This is a no for me dawg, let's hope I am luckier in my next pick, as this is depressing.

If you love 80s action mixed with noir mixed with supernatural creatures, get this now!

Really enjoyed this book. Michael Haspil brings old school amazing story telling to this wonderful vamp/werewolf/action/crime noir.

A refreshing original story when everything is a reskin.

Cannot wait for the next installment!

This is what urban fantasy needs!

Vampires are out in the open now and UMBRA, a top secret group of government-funded vampire hunters, has been dismantled. Now Alex, a former UMBRA agent, has to navigate a new world of bloody drinks at every corner store and a good chunk of the world that operates at night instead of the day. Instantly, I was captivated by this main character. Alex isn’t your typical vampire hunter. He’s got some supernatural secrets of his own. And a cat.

The former Pharaoh, Alex Menkaure, now lives in Miami working as Detective Alex Romero. A murder mystery needs to be solved fast before more civilians and Nocturnes (as vampires like to be called) die. When it became apparent that someone has been tampering with commercially available blood drinks (Hemo-Synth), I did flash to True Blood briefly. While this central plot point may not be original, the story still worked really well.

Marcus, Alex’s partner, is also a vampire, one who once was a Roman Imperator. So the two do most of their work at night. They eventually team up with some unlikely allies to solve this murder mystery and bring down the criminal mastermind going by the name Abraham. Marcus and Alex have great banter between them. I often enjoyed a dark chuckle.

Betrayal and dangerous enemies make life hard for Alex. I enjoyed all the action. There was never a dull moment. I really hope for a sequel. 4.5/5 stars.

The Narration: Michael Kramer has long been a favorite voice to listen to. I was quite pleased to hear him give life to this story. He had distinct voices for all the characters, including a variety of accents. His female voices were believable. All around, it was a great performance. 5/5 stars.
