Publisher's summary

There is a most unusual woman living in Gap Greek. Julie Harmon works hard, "hard as a man," they say, so hard that times she's not sure she can stop. She is the one who has to be strong when first her brother and then her father die. People depend on her. They need her to slaughter the hogs and cut the wood. People are weak, and there is so much to do.

Though she is just a teenager, she marries Hank and moves with him down from the high country to Gap Creek. There they discover that life grinds ever on without pause or concern for hard work. Scratching out an existence for themselves, always at risk of losing it all, Julie and Hank don't know what to fear the most - floods, or the flesh-and-blood grifters who insinuate themselves into their new lives. Their struggles with nature, with work, and with the disappointments and triumphs of marriage make this a powerful story.

Painfully beautiful...

When I first I read it, I couldn't take it. I kept putting the book down... Julie, the protagonist, suffers a lot. I felt her pain, her frustrations, her fears, her struggle as a mother, wife, daughter... Sometimes it was too painful to swallow! But remarkaby, here lies the beauty of the book. It was never pretentious of the pain and the suffering. It never tried to hide the struggle either. The author described the life of Julie as it should be and not what we wanted it to be! What I found brilliant also was that it was narrrated through Julie's point of view and therefore, the impact of the story was far greater than anyone could imagine! There is raw yet simple beauty to this book... I highly recommend it!:)

Life today is so easy...

I didn't just hear this book, I felt the exsperiences of these people. Life then, compared to life today makes me thankful and very respectful of our forfathers even more.
Get this book and have a few hours of sheer wonder, pleasure and pain.

Exceptional

Julie Harmon is a strong protagonist. Her story is not one you read or listen to, you live it with her. You experience her pain, grief, determination and dispare.
It's been a long time since a story moved me as this one did. I would love to see it adapted into a screenplay.

unfinished

I have the book to go along with this audiobook and I was very happy to find it on audible. until it started skipping lines and details in the book. and then I was really confused because it skipped a whole chapter and a half of the hard copy book. I'm very disappointed.

Wonderful...truly

I absolutely love this book. It is so engaging and when I was reading it I felt pulled in. Most of it was very sad but also very empowering how she kept pushing forward. I strongly wish they would make a film for this.

Abridged

So disappointed that this book is abridged. What's even more disappointing is that nowhere does it say it's abridged on the order page. Audible has been doing Shit like this and it's getting ready old.

I absolutely love this story and the entire trilogy of the Julie Harmon family. I have read this book 10x over. Love Robert Morgan as well, a fabulous writer.

Good but doesn't hold a candle to the actual book

I liked this book but it's nothing compared to the paper copy. There were so many things left out...The narration was great but gosh I wish they didn't shorten it so much. I'm going to read the actual book of Road From Gap Creek just because I don't want to miss out on any details I did with the audio version
