Publisher's Summary

It's the story "They" don't want you to listen to. Though, to be fair, "They" are probably right about this one. To quote the Bible, "Learning the truth can be like loosening a necktie, only to realize it was the only thing keeping your head attached". No, don't put the book back on the shelf - it is now your duty to purchase it to prevent others from listening to it. Yes, it works with audiobooks, too, I don't have time to explain how.

While investigating a fairly straightforward case of a shape-shifting interdimensional child predator, Dave, John, and Amy realized there might actually be something weird going on. Together, they navigate a diabolically convoluted maze of illusions, lies, and their own incompetence in an attempt to uncover a terrible truth they - like you - would be better off not knowing.

Your first impulse will be to think that a story this gruesome - and, to be frank, stupid - cannot possibly be true. That is precisely the reaction "They" are hoping for.

Nothing really happens.

I guess the title really says it all. Won’t give any spoilers but honestly, if you found there was peril to any of the characters in any way, at any time; you let me know.

Really ham fisted message at the end that perhaps could have come at the front.

Narrator falls well below the standard set in Wongs previous three books.

It was just a smidge more than OK. Which is disappointing after everything else I have read that Jason has written.

Maybe time to retire David and John and Amy? Seems like it is super hard to get creative after spiders in this universe. You know?

The best so far?

If you're not familiar with the series go check out "John Dies at the End". If you are familiar with the series and want to know what to expect from the third installment, the answer is: more of the same... in the best way.

Cosmic Horror is a good subtitle. This one goes a bit more Lovecraft than the previous books. Much like This Book is Full of Spiders, the story is more put together than John Dies at the End. This one is also a bit (only just a bit, I promise) more serious than the other two, and presents some interesting ethical arguments.

Altogether, this could be the best John book so far.

Not bad... but not great.

I like these books. David Wong's gloriously damaged anti-heros are up again inter-dimensional evil again! As an audio book... the performance was spot on. I immediately felt like we were picking up right where the last book ended. It really helps pull you back into David and John's world again.
However... this wasn't a great story. It's kinda like hanging out with those great old friends, only to find that while you loved seeing them, and you really did miss them... you didn't actually have a great time seeing them this time. Maybe you should have gone bowling with them instead?
If you are a fan of the series, you should absolutely get this. It's the same David, John, and Amy, doing much of the same silly crap that made you like them the last time. But... It's not the best in the series. On its own... it's "meh". At one point, David actually points out that they could have stayed in bed all week, and literally nothing would be any different. I can't help but feel this is a tragic waste of such colorful characters.
Not that Dave, John and Amy ever exactly "win" against vast inter-dimensional evil forces... but I would like to see them get a few hits in. Or maybe just kick evil in the balls as they leave. This one missed that "F@#$ you" feeling.
Certainly not a bad book. Still entertaining. Just not going to be my favorite of the series.
