Publisher's Summary

"We never know how high we are / Till we are called to rise; And then, if we are true to plan, / Our statures touch the skies." (Emily Dickinson)

Beyond Las Vegas' casinos lies a boomtown where four lives can be brought together by one split-second choice.

In the predawn hours, a woman's marriage crumbles with a single confession. Across town, an immigrant family struggles to fit in and get by in the land of opportunity. Three thousand miles away, a soldier wakes up in Walter Reed hospital with the vague feeling that he’s done something awful. In a single moment, these disparate lives intersect. Faced with seemingly insurmountable loss, each person must decide whether to give in to despair, or to find the courage and resilience to rise.

We Are Called to Rise is a story about a child's fate. It is a story about families - the ones we have and the ones we make. It challenges us to think about our responsibilities to one another and reminds us that compassion and charity can rescue us, even in our darkest moment. It is a book that will break your heart and then put it back together.

    "Despair, Disaster & Disappointment Explored"

I am three hours into this book and I have decided that I need to do a much better job choosing what I listen to here on audible. If I had been better at reading between the lines of the reviews here and on amazon I would have seen this sad story coming and been able to avoid such a dire, unhappy tale of suffering.

This book is set in Las Vegas and reminded me of The Goldfinch--the part where they lived in Las Vegas--the main difference is that this story is more depressing and not as well written. Hard to believe--I know. I can't recommend this book --unless for some reason you need to explore despair, betrayal, loss and heart ache through fiction--and really there are better books out there for that.

It was an interesting read, with interesting characters, especially the boy. But it build to a crescendo then ended; suddenly, leaving me with an unsatisfied feeling.

Like a lifetime movie. Dnf. Boring and tedious. Not sure if narrator skewed my perspective with some of the characters. Could be better not audio.

What disappointed you about We Are Called to Rise?

The story was going nowhere. It drug on for hours. I kept thinking it would get better with all of the positive reviews. I finally had to stop listening.

What do you think your next listen will be?

    Nothing by this author

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Some of the narrators were immigrants, but they had no accent. Very surprising. It just made it seem more unreal.

What character would you cut from We Are Called to Rise?

    I didn't have a favorite.

    Any additional comments?

    no

it wasn't good at first. then it got worse. then it was ending and tried to get edgy as hell but failed. if you really think about it, it wouldn't happen. none of this book makes sense.

I hated this book during the first painfully slow half. But it picks up and wraps you in. It's tearful ending is perfect

Avid reader since I could figure out the funny papers in late '50's. Taken me awhile to appreciate audible books.

Where does We Are Called to Rise rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

We are called to Rise is ranked about middle if I were to rank my books. I choose carefully as my listening is usually during long solo drives.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The child--he was innocent and yet so very wise about about his family's disruptive relationship with each other--his Baba's imprisonment before immigration which made him volatile. So many events happened to him and yet he held on.

    Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene was in the courtroom when the judge present the decision of child custody and the reasoning. Truly would be a village raising a family.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Same as above---however unrealistic that the court system would have a hand in creating a loving home for more than one family.

    "It was ok"

I picked up this book for a school assignment in psychology, assessing the characters from a psychological standpoint and to that degree I suppose it was alright for educational purposes but I wouldn't read something like this on my own. It was like one of those movies you pick on Netflix because you're bored and in the end you just sit there going why the hell did I just watch this?

    "Diverse characters, great listen"

Really enjoyed and already recommended to friends. Liked the diversity of the characters as well as their development. You get engrossed and look forward to having time to listen to some more of their impending drama. Good for either male or female listeners. First time listen by this author and would look into more of her books.
