Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential: If you've seen the Tom Hanks movie, you know this is a great story. But do yourself a favor and listen to it. Frank Muller, chosen to narrate by King himself, turns each character into flesh and blood with the pitch and pacing of his voice. I spent a Saturday with my headphones on because I couldn't turn off the story before finishing it. (I apologize for my rudeness to the person who called me that afternoon. You couldn't have known that I was dealing with life and death issues.) —Beth Anderson

Publisher's Summary

Hear this history-making serial novel - from cliffhanger to cliffhanger - in its entirety. When it first appeared, one volume per month, Stephen King's The Green Mile was an unprecedented publishing triumph: all six volumes ended up on the New York Times best seller list - simultaneously - and delighted millions of fans the world over.

Welcome to Cold Mountain Penitentiary, home to the Depression-worn men of E Block. Convicted killers all, each awaits his turn to walk the Green Mile, keeping a date with "Old Sparky," Cold Mountain's electric chair. Prison guard Paul Edgecombe has seen his share of oddities in his years working the Mile. But he's never seen anyone like John Coffey, a man with the body of a giant and the mind of a child, condemned for a crime terrifying in its violence and shocking in its depravity. In this place of ultimate retribution, Edgecombe is about to discover the terrible, wondrous truth about Coffey, a truth that will challenge his most cherished beliefs...and yours.

    Story
    "Absolutely fantastic "

I had seen the movie as a teenager, but I decided to get this novel, as a way of trying out Stephen King and seeing if I like his writing. This book was fantastic. So many things intermingled and woven together to create a magical, yet still believable world. I find it incredible that he can tie up all of the loose ends to this story, but still leave the reader wondering. This is not a novel in the standard sense, but a series of episodes that were published separately. Like a TV show with cliffhangers, the end of each makes you want to keep going. There isn't a section of the episode where the narrator starts "Last time on the Green Mile..." like so many sitcoms. Instead the nods to the prior section are woven into the story, and do not hamper the narrative at all. The narrator chosen was absolutely perfect. I live in the southern United States, and this story is set in Georgia. The narrator has the perfect blend of southern pronunciation without it being a sappy drawl that is so obviously faked. He reads slowly, but that is very reminiscent of the 1930s as well as the South in general. If you can't stand that, I think there's a setting in the app where you can speed up narration. I can't stress enough how much I enjoyed this book. Like savoring a good and tender steak, I will be spending some time chewing on the story, and it will probably be a little while before I start another one.

    "life changing"

life changing story leaves you thinking about the story long after. John was such a movie character. I can't help but think of him saying that wild Bill killed the little girls with their love and how that happens all over the world everyday.

    "A touching story of love"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is a beautiful story with interesting characters. The reader is one of the best I have ever heard. It is the story of 1932 death row prison, the guards and the prisoners. A new prisoner comes on the block who is very large with a special gift.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Green Mile?

When Koffee says that the two girls died for love of each other. I had read this story years ago but that line and the explanation behind it has never left me.

What about Frank Muller’s performance did you like?

Frank's performance could not have been better. His use of voice volume, articulating each word, and not rushing a scene were frosting on the cake to a great story.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The story is touching and moved me with the power that empathy has for the characters.

    "Very Good!"

Nice read. Not King's best work I feel but still good. I feel bored at times with it and it took me a lot longer to really get into it. I am not saying that it's a bad book. When you read it together you can really tell that it is supposed to be broken up.
