Publisher's Summary

The last of 3 daughters, Tita is saddled with a terrible responsibility that tradition carries down: in well-born Mexican families, the youngest daughter must remain unmarried and stay at home to care for her mother in old age. When she falls in love, Mama Elena refuses to bend the rules, and forces Tita to reject her suitor and assume the role of family cook. The result is a clash of wills that brings magic, love, sex, and fabulously good food to a previously unknown level of enjoyment.

In a direct, simple, and compelling voice, Laura Esquivel has produced a fresh and innovative work, bringing her own inimitable strengths to a classic love story. It is read by actress, playwright, and performance artist Yareli Arizmendi who played "Rosaura" in the film version of Like Water for Chocolate.

Critic Reviews

"A tall-tale, fairy-tale, soap-opera romance, Mexican cookbook, and home-remedy handbook all rolled into one, Like Water For Chocolate is one tasty entree from first-time novelist Laura Esquivel." (San Francisco Chronicle)

Great story, sound quality not so much.

I loved the story; magical without being too out there. I also really liked Yareli Arizmendi's voice - she gave the characters real lives and feelings. The problem with the book is that the sound quality is poor. It's distorted and the background music and sound effects sometimes makes the narrator hard to hear.

I'd recommend this book, but only if it's on sale. The quality just isn't quite there.

Scrumptious Mexican Folk Tale for Adults

My sweetheart and I listened to this audiobook on cassette tapes borrowed from the library almost 20 years ago just after it was released, and savored every moment. (This time through I liked it only slightly less well, mainly because the ending felt rushed and didn't match up with my 20-year-old memory of how the story ended.) It definitely held up overall for a second listen, and someday I'll probably give it a third listen. This story is part adult fairy tale/folk tale, part cookbook, part steamy love story, part home remedy recipe book...it's delicious and nutritious and yes, the ending is weird, but that's okay. You're gonna love it anyway.

Special note for those trying to figure out which version to buy: YOU DEFINITELY WANT THIS ONE. Yes, this version is abridged, but in this case the abridged version is more authentic and satisfying because the narrator is Latina and perfect for the material. This definitely needs to be read by a native Spanish speaker; DO NOT waste your money or a credit on the unabridged version read by an Anglo. Besides, this time through I liked the story enough to buy the Kindle book so I could see what-all was cut out for the abridged audiobook, and it felt like hardly anything was.

Grade: B+ or A-
Bechdel test: Pass.

Lovely abridged recording.

The story is enchanting, but as I followed along with the book I realized it was abridged. That surprised me because it's a very short novel, and it wasn't clearly posted as an abridged recording. It doesn't take away too much from the story, especially because Arizmendi did such a lovely job reading it! I was really glad there was a version available where the reader had a Spanish accent. Despite the small missing passages, I would still buy it again.
