Publisher's Summary

"Joyland is a breathtaking, beautiful, heartbreaking book.... Even the most hardboiled readers will find themselves moved."
—Charles Ardai, Edgar- and Shamus Award-winning editor of Hard Case Crime.

Set in a small-town North Carolina amusement park in 1973, Joyland tells the story of the summer in which college student Devin Jones comes to work as a carny and confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child, and the ways both will change his life forever. Joyland is a brand-new novel and has never previously been published.

"THERE'S A LOT TO BE SAID FOR BOREDOM"

    NEVER KID A KIDDER, KIDO
I love Stephen King and most of his books, and Jim the Impatient, listened to this whole thing, so it is not boring. It is not horror, it's kind of a cheap imitation of Water For Elephants. As much as I love King, I will advise you to read Water for Elephants instead. It is better written, more involved, scarier, and a better look at circus life then this is a look at Carney life.

WHEN IT COMES TO THE PAST, EVERYONE WRITES FICTION.
If this had been a true story, it might have been a tear jerker, if we had been more invested in the characters, it would have been less cheesy. Like Howard Stern says on America's Got Talent," Mr. King, I believe you fell a little flat tonight, I loved what you did in previous nights, but tonight something was missing." Bachman's version of this story would be more to my taste.

    MAKE IT JOB ONE
I also wonder if the mother had not been drop dead gorgeous if our hero would have befriended the cripple. Sorry kid, your mother's too plain looking.

I'M AS DRY AS TEN YEAR DOG SH@@

    "Simple, subtle, and superb... "

Not being a fan of the horror genre, I always love when Mr. King releases a book like Joyland. I read the book before listening, and really enjoyed it. I liked it even more when I got to hear it. The audio performance is spectacular. I really enjoyed the delivery and the accent work. It sounded very authentic. The book itself is a slow roll through what seems like quite an amazing summer for our young narrator. I don't mean "slow" as in "boring" in any way. I mean slow like southern hospitality, warm and inviting. I live by an old amusement park outside of Copenhagen (Called "Bakken" it is earth's oldest, in fact), and have literally thought about going to work there. If there was a way to capture Devin Jones' summer, I'd do it in a heartbeat. While I'm certainly not "carny from carny," this book made me think there may well be a little carny in my soul.

A spooky summer read for a young adult and a return to college summers for those older.

    "Horror, as beauty, is everywhere"

I won't be able to provide a fitting summation of the story... but, those are plentiful online...
instead, i will say that Mr. King started his career by showing us what was lurking in the Dark... at some point, perhaps after an extended stay in hospital, he became the greatest of our time at showing us all that there is darkness in the daylight and light in the darkness...
Don't read this title if you are hoping for a horror novel... but, you must read this story if you are seeking a rewarding and powerful tale of life, love and... yes, magic... the magic of life and the human spirit...
May we all find more darkness than light... and, may we all use our own version of the Sight to touch others...
    Read, enjoy... live well

"Love the book, loved the narrator"

Joyland is a joy to listen to, made even better by Michael Kelly's narration. Suspense, very human characters and touching scenes . I highly recommend this Audiblebook.
