Publisher's Summary

Jack's prize money has set the household accounts aright, but if he continues frittering it on naive extravagances, it will be gone in a fortnight. Fortunately he gets a commission aboard the Leopard, bound for Australia to rescue the hated and captive Captain Bligh.

Don't miss the rest of the Aubrey/Maturin series.

©1978 Patrick O'Brian; (P)2003 Recorded Books, LLC.

What the Critics Say

"O'Brian is not that hard a taste to acquire, but he is very tough to shake...[the Aubrey/Maturin series] is a great work." (Boston Globe)

"My favorite of the first five, but not by much"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

Like the other Aubrey/Maturin novels, I think this could benefit from generous editing. I found hat my mind often wandered while listening to both this and the other books in the series. I also find that the books in this series lack a sense of suspense even when there are battles, ship emergencies, etc.

Would you recommend Desolation Island to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes, but with a warning that this isn't an adventure novel like a Bernard Cornwell book, but reads more like a Victorian novel that takes place on board a naval ship.

What three words best describe Patrick Tull’s voice?

Blustery old chap?!? Sometimes Tull sounds almost like a caricature of the old sea dog. I do find that Tull reads slowly, and setting 1.25x speed works best.

Could you see Desolation Island being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Probably not. I don't think there is enough action for a feature movie.

    Any additional comments?

I am mixed about the Aubrey/Maturin books. They are enjoyable, but I just can't get into them like so many others seem to.

Another excellent story, this one filled with misfortune and foreboding. Maybe one of the best.

    "Brilliant"

Very well done. Patrick Tull gives us another amazing rendition. This book is a bit slower paced than the previous books, but no less exciting. Patrick O'Brian is such a writer, amazing series so far!

    "Oh the unlucky Leopard...."

Though I can't be sure, i think the books oscillate between being more heavily from Jack's perspective to Stephen's. If they do this one is Steven's (it's almost like Peep Show)

There is a passage from his perspective about "obligatory facetiousness" that brilliantly captures that workplace, small talk, bs, banal, wrote banter so many people engage in that I find utterly enraging

I know I'm going to turn right around when I finish this enormous series and start right over again and I will definitely be looking forward to this one. I hope we get to know why that bloody Jonas was so tenacious at some point.

Strange that it's during this one, the most harrowing by far, that I'm signing up to learn to crew on a tall ship

    "Dialogue"

The dialogue is what is bringing me back to Aubrey/Maturin series. I just can't get enough of the details from Patrick O'Brian. There is no page unturned in "Desolation Island" and in the series. The conversation between Capt. Jack and Dr. Stephen is almost addicting to listen to as they sail sea to sea. I almost want to cheat and read the last book in the series and go backwards, but I don't dare because fortune tellers aren't real and there is no crystal ball on who is going to survive the voyage.

    "I love this series."
    Any additional comments?

As simple as that. This series is magnificent and I treat it like a rare treasure. Whenever I feel like there is nothing I want to 'read'/listen to, I get another gem from this series.

Patrick Tull was born to read these books, his rendition is brilliant and eminently fits the material.

    "Best historically accurate fiction ever"

These books contain literally every one of the Genres of Great literature. Don't be miss led by the movie "master and commander "- the relational aspects are every bit as fascinating as the amazing adventures. With 21 volumes, you will be immersed in the complete life and times of the early 19th century.

    "Excellent tale, well told!"

Patrick Tull has a perfect voice for narrating Patrick O'Brian's nautical historical fiction. I recommend this and the other stories heartily.
