Publisher's Summary

The Barner family relocates to Cold Hollow, a quaint town nestled in a Vermont mountain range. They find it to be quite charming, and the inhabitants endearing, except for a few residents. Odd laws are enforced, confrontations begin, and insanity reigns as a madman sits upon his imaginary throne, trying to keep the threads of his dream from unraveling. Will Sophia and Angus Barner be able to protect their children from the malevolence that lurks within the small township? This is the story of a place you'll never want to visit.

Strong Story - Love the twists! no zombies

This audiobook was given by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review.

I was slower to appreciate this book, but that was due to my own expectations. I looked at the cover and said "Zombie book!"

It's not. Not even close! I love zombie books, and I was disappointed when this one wasn't one! There is definitely horror here, though! There are some great, creepy elements that had me itching while listening. You know how people love to listen to music and think about where the sound may have been inspired from? I found myself thinking along those lines in this book. I won't say my thoughts, though, so as to avoid any spoilers! I appreciated certain similarities to other books I've read, and appreciated more how this book stood on its own on that foundation. I felt the whole gamut of emotion during this story and some visuals I got while reading will probably stay with me a LOOOOONG time. There are some truly haunting aspects, and it's so well written that I cannot get these people out of my head.

With praise like this, why no 5th star? More than anything, I think there were a couple details that were just too convenient and I found myself taken out of my reading hypnosis by those jarring moments.

That said, the gifted voice of J. Scott Bennett does it again for me. I've listened to so many of his books, now, and I love the way he voices all the characters with unique quirks. I recommend this book, unless you're only looking for zombies. No zombies.

A gripping tale with great surprises

This is a gripping, creepy and unique audiobook. Cold Hollow on the surface appears to be just a normal rural town; promising the Barner family the safety and comfort that small town life usually brings, but all is not what it seems. Not only is that safety a façade, but the whole town seems to be riddle with secrets. This story has lots of twists and turns that you will not be able to guess at. Your heart will bleed for some of the characters and others you will want to shoot. The author and narrator draw you into the story and hold you tight in its grip to the very last page. The narrators voice fits the characters well, portraying the increasing tension and generally enhanced the story. This is a thrilling, fast paced story that you won’t be able to stop listening to, it is brutal, compelling and will keep you on the edge of your seat. I received the audiobook in exchange for my honest opinion.

Great beginning to a fun ride!!!

Cold Hollow was excellent. The story was well developed, emotionally provocative and thoroughly enjoyable. The small town of Cold Hollow was populated with genuine people who feel real. They all are very quirky and in the case of this story, everyone has something they are trying to hide just boiling under the surface and wanting out. Reminded me very much of the way Stephen King writes his small town characters. There was intrigue, murder and mystery. What more could you ask for. Amazing.

J. Scott Bennett did a fantastic job with his subtle narration and superb character voices, he is definitely someone that I look forward to hearing when I am looking for new books.

I requested a free review copy of this audiobook and I am leaving a voluntary and honest review.

Gripping tale with great surprises

Would you listen to Cold Hollow again? Why?

Yes, I would listen again and would love to explore the entire series

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Plot of this story is so creepy. I always find a book set in a tight knit small town creepy anyway but add in even shadier characters and you have the recipe for a great book

Which character – as performed by J. Scott Bennett – was your favorite?

Myrna Bradbury, she is just the kind of friend I would love to have. J. Scott Bennett did a great job with the narration. I had no problem following who was talking at any given time

Any additional comments?

Cold Hollow

This was a very unique story.I really enjoyed it and could not wait to read more so I am now on the 3rd book!J Scott Bennet does a wonderful job narrating.A family moves to a town for a new job opportunity, but it is not the place they think it is.Weird laws and fees are just one thing they don't agree with. When they stand up for their rights, they learn they have none.People die mysteriously and go missing.Things would have worked out better had they not questioned the 'norm'

Creepy mayor

I usually prefer stories with a supernatural or paranormal background. However, the storytelling and characters were so engaging that it wasn't until the final chapter that I realized this book had neither. I never even noticed due to the excellent plot and reading. Excellent. Highly recommended.
Even though I received this audible book for free, my opinion is unbiased and honest. Great story!

I think I found a new favorite series

This book is so good and so creepy. The inhabitants of the perfect-looking town of Cold Hollow hide a secret. This book keeps readers engaged from start to finish, and I finished it in one sitting. I got a little confused in the beginning when the story was jumping from character to character, but as the book progressed, I saw how each character fit into the story. This story is very dark, and yet, there is some humor in it, too. I listened to the Audible audio version of this book, narrated by J. Scott Bennett. I have loved everything I've heard him do. This book is no exception. He has a unique voice that really makes the story come alive. Overall, this was a great book, and I'm really looking forward to more books in the series.

Interesting and somewhat unexpected

I'm not sure what to think of the actual story. I found the writing to be exact and very detailed which, in some ways, tends to take away from the imagination, but in other ways enhances it. I was actually waiting for something totally different to be revealed as the story progressed, so the ending was a pleasant surprise. The epilogue was sweet, and brought tears to my eyes.

The narration was clean. I'm never quite sure if a story would benefit more for having two narrators ... One for the female characters and one for the males.

I am looking forward to listening to the other two books in the series.

Spellbinding and spectacular!

This book was amazing! It was full of plot twists and sub plots and lurking under it all was a truly twisted idea that all too easily could have been a real experiment. The characters were dark and twisted with cores of gold or hellish sulfur. You grew to love and hate them and sometimes both for the same character. The reveals were shocking to the core. The narration was spot on. I can't wait for more!!!! I received this audiobook from the author narrator or publisher for free via audiobookboom in exchange for an unbiased review

Creepy and engaging at the same time

What did you like most about Cold Hollow?

The plot of this is creepy but very good. The setting is perfect but what makes it really stand out are the characters and the feeling you get that things are not at all what they seem. You know that something is coming but what will it be??

The characters were all very well written and developed.

Would you be willing to try another book from Emilie J. Howard? Why or why not?

Absolutely. The author did a very good job with this book. It really is very good. In fact stop reading this review and jump into the book!

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The ending was amazing. Saying that I was engaged and entertained throughout as it has great pace. Myrna steps up at the end, getting payback for all the years of abuse from Mizar. Even as she started planning and aligning her allies I wasn’t sure if she would be successful. The tension that has built in the last few chapters is brilliant! I was also satisfied with how things turned out. Does everyone get out alive? No spoilers read it! I will say however that wrongs have been righted as the book concludes.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I liked the homely potentially sweet little town feel that we get as the Barners arrive in Cold Hollow. At this point the focus of the book shifts to them. Sophia revels in opening her new bakery. She puts the kids (Liam and Leila) to work part time there and even then needs to hire another hand to keep things going. Myrna becomes an important part of the story as she forms a friendship with Sophia and tries to smooth the way for the Barners in the town. And all of this helps to lead to the tension that comes as things change as they settle into an odd town with odd rules.

Cold Hollow

Any additional comments?

I received this book for free in return for an honest review.

On one hand, I liked this book. The characterization was good, and the relationships between the characters were nice, if made slightly fast. I'm pretty sure Myrna decided she liked Sophia seconds after meeting her.

On the other hand, I found the pacing really strange. It's pretty slow going but at the same time I wanted to know what the secret behind the town was. You discover the plot twist roughly halfway through and I found it somewhat disappointing for the level of intrigue that had been built up.

Overall, it was a decent book that was somewhat disappointing.
