Publisher's Summary

Based on the true story of a forgotten hero, Beneath a Scarlet Sky is the triumphant, epic tale of one young man's incredible courage and resilience during one of history's darkest hours.

Pino Lella wants nothing to do with the war or the Nazis. He's a normal Italian teenager - obsessed with music, food, and girls - but his days of innocence are numbered. When his family home in Milan is destroyed by Allied bombs, Pino joins an underground railroad helping Jews escape over the Alps, and falls for Anna, a beautiful widow six years his senior.

In an attempt to protect him, Pino's parents force him to enlist as a German soldier - a move they think will keep him out of combat. But after Pino is injured, he is recruited at the tender age of eighteen to become the personal driver for Adolf Hitler's left hand in Italy, General Hans Leyers, one of the Third Reich's most mysterious and powerful commanders.

Now, with the opportunity to spy for the Allies inside the German High Command, Pino endures the horrors of the war and the Nazi occupation by fighting in secret, his courage bolstered by his love for Anna and for the life he dreams they will one day share.

Fans of All the Light We Cannot See, The Nightingale, and Unbroken will enjoy this riveting saga of history, suspense, and love.

"The story was okay but the narration..."

I almost stopped listening several times because of the monotone of the narrator and the maudlin, sappy inflection to his voice. The only thing that made me finish was curiosity about the end of the story.

"Just wow. Thank you Mark Sullivan...."

I rarely review, but this was such a different, human perspective of WW2 in Italy and showed so clearly, how murky options and people can be in real life. I will bear witness to Pino's story, and remember he and Anna always..great narration too.

    Story
    "Overly simple"
What disappointed you about Beneath a Scarlet Sky?

Very simple story without much nuance or individual details.
    Spoiler !!!-
The main character is supposed to have been a spy working as a driver for the Nazis but never seems to get anything truly valuable done as a spy
The romance is SO one dimension you don't even care much when trajectory hits -
The most interesting parts were in the very beginning smuggling Jews out of Italy- then it just get so middling - and just one hyperbolic event after another.

Would you be willing to try another one of Will Damron’s performances?

    No-
And to the producers- and this is only one opinion-having really flat American sounding voices
Tremendously hurts books like this and All the Light you can not see( same frustrating listen)-and other books that take place in Europe . It flattens out the whole story.
One of my favorite productions are the reading of Bryce Courtenay
Books by Humphrey Bower- the knowledge of approraite accent and
Timing and nuance makes them amazing to listen to.
This reader does nothing for the story and likely hurts it.
He would be fine reading other stories such as maybe Michael Chabon or fiction in contemporary settings- ideally American settings.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Frustrating

Starts out real slow, I almost did not listen to the entire book. So glad that I did listen to the whole book, it is a really good story.

    "History as good as fiction"
    Any additional comments?

I'm a daily listener to audiobooks while I commute. This book was SO good at captivating me and making mental images that it was almost too distracting to my driving! So in short, I dont write many reviews, but I LOVED this book...the story was great, the narrator was top-flight with excellent charachter portrayals, and the slice of life & time during WWII in N Italy satisfied the history buff in me. It really was as good or better than alot of fiction, but it was all true!

    "A must read"

I am "hooked" on stories that are coming out about the very brave people who did do something during the war to save Jews, women, children and men. This story was particularly poignant as it detailed 2 years in the life of a 17 year boy who helped save many lives without much thought for his own safety. It is a true account which makes it even more humbling

"A Story that needs to be shared. Astounding!"

At first I was not sure but as the story unfolded and the amazing events were told I was perpetually moved by this young mans story. Despite the fiction that had to be filled in, the narrative was amazingly told by both author and narrator. Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, yes, those were great but this was distinct in location, diverse in events and tragically heart wrenching and warming at the same time. If you enjoyed The One Man by Andrew Gross or other similar then you will love this. Despite identifying the fictionalized parts( I think)it stays tight to the vest without over satiating the veracity of the story. Thank you Mark for telling Pino Lella's story.

"Gripping story on how war impacts lives."

I felt like I knew the characters, felt their loss was me loss. Made me appreciate the desperation of people in a war torn country, were law and order falls apart. The pain of seeing an innocent loved one executed was emotionally gripping experience. The reader of the recorded book turned in an award winning performance if there ever was one.

    "Amazing Story, And It's True"

This is the story of a young Italian man, who was in his late teens during the last 3 years of WWII, and it is amazing,, even more so because it is a true story. This is a story of a man following his faith and serving in the Catholic underground railroad guiding Jewish refuges from Fascist Milan through the dangerous Alps passes to Switzerland. It's also a love story as he meets the love of his life in the midst of war, while he is also serving the Allies as a spy, working within the highest levels of the German High Command in Italy. Performed very well, this is an exciting and engaging book that it is a pleasure to highly recommemd.
