Publisher's summary

Sometimes, the most evil things come from the most holy....

Conflicted with his faith in God and the hypocrisy of the church, Aidan Schaeffer, a young assistant pastor, is in a constant state of spiritual turmoil. When Aidan learns that his ex-fiancée is the first victim in a string of ritualistic killings, he finds himself in the middle of an even deeper fight. Tormented by demonic threats and haunted by spirits, Aidan throws himself into investigating Amanda’s death; all the while supernatural forces have begun to attack the people around him. The more questions he asks, the more he is drawn into the world of a mysterious Anglican priest, a paranormal investigation group and a rogue female detective investigating the murders. As the gruesome rituals escalate, ancient hidden secrets and an evil long buried threaten to rip Aidan’s world apart.

Loved this novel

Story line down to earth but real and intriguing...a hint of the supernatural along with religion.

Entertaining is least this book has to offer.

This book changed my life...again. As a true fan or the horror / thriller genre this book was spectacular. The writing was outstanding, the narration exceptional but there was something else.....something beautiful in it's undertones.

Without giving you TMI...I suffered a year 12 years ago that stopped my 3 time a week mass attendance. In a period of 12 months my husband and I lost our beloved dog. my father, his mother and our child. The impact this had on my faith was unfathomable.......until I finished this book. I attended Mass last Sunday for the first time and 12 years. Life is a cosmic balance, and there can be no good without evil, no evil without good.

Thank you Jonathon for jarring my faith and for one hell of a read.

great read for the paranormal fan

this book went by quickly having finished in just a couple of days. a lot of the credit goes to the performance by the reader. creepy for sure and perfect for a stormy night. can't wait to read the sequel.

took two tries to get into, but then WOW!

it starts slowly with a guy who has lost faith. ho hum. then it becomes unbelievably good. this narrator when he does the old man voice is beyond belief. i suspended my disbelief and for a time was entranced by the book and narrator. give it a try or two. you will agree with mw on 5 stars i will bet.

not scary at all

I purchased this audio book largely based on other customer reviews and I was disappointed. There were a few times I found my self saying out loud are you kidding me? in other parts of the story it was predictable. For an atmospheric thriller I prefer something along the lines of MR James or short stories from Stephen King and Neil Gaiman.

how did this get such high ratings? snoozefest

great start but man! what a slog. protagonist is unlikable. monster comes in waaaaay too late. I'm all for exposition (I'm a King reader for heavens sake) but this is ridiculous. how did this get such high ratings? snoozefest

Meh - Really Geared for Christians

Has 3 Gates of the Dead turned you off from other books in this genre?

Kind of - no surprises most of the horror audiobooks are fairly flat, flaccid, mainstream...

What does Kaleo Griffith bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Interesting range of voices and good character empathy

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Boredom

Any additional comments?

An interesting opportunity to go deep in exploring symbolism instead just scratches the surface with mundane Christian guilt instead.
