Fast After 50 is for every endurance athlete who wants to stay fast for years to come.

For runners, cyclists, triathletes, swimmers, and cross-country skiers, getting older doesn't have to mean getting slower. Drawing from the most current research on aging and sports performance, Joe Friel—America's leading endurance sports coach—shows how athletes can race strong and stay healthy well past age 50.

In his groundbreaking book Fast After 50, Friel offers a smart approach for athletes to ward off the effects of age. Friel shows athletes how to extend their racing careers for decades—and race to win.

Fast After 50 presents guidelines for high-intensity workouts, focused strength training, recovery, crosstraining, and nutrition for high performance:

  • How the body's response to training changes with age, how to adapt your training plan, and how to avoid overtraining
  • How to shed body fat and regain muscle density
  • How to create a progressive plan for training, rest, recovery, and competition
  • Workout guidelines, field tests, and intensity measurement

In Fast After 50, Joe Friel shows athletes that age is just a number—and race results are the only numbers that count.

I really enjoyed the book and was encouraged by all the science based info it includes. Lots of practical advice on how to train. I have put it to work and am seeing results.

Very Helpful!

A really good book for us who are over 50 and still enjoy training in spite of limits of advancing age.

Easy to follow advices and hints to train, even without personal coach.

I strongly recommend this book.

Good advices to train

Full disclaimer, I do not and will not ever race. I am a middle of the pack cycling enthusiast. I got this audio-book for a couple of reasons - I am an aging cyclist and wanted to get Joe's take on training in my mid-50's. I also have the "Cyclists Training Bible" on the top of my bookshelf next to my trainer, so I was interested in hearing more from Joe Friel.

The concepts were interesting and I appreciated the amount of research that must have gone into to putting this book together. It is a little difficult to follow any reference type book on audio, so where it really falls apart is in the production. The Chapters are just labelled by number with no reference to what the chapter is about. That makes it pretty impossible to go back and re-listen to something without a lot of guesswork. They really could have made this much more usable by taking the time to come up with some indexing for the audio.

Bottom line is that I enjoyed it, but I will go buy a hard copy.

Interesting, But Difficult to Reference

Too much fitness for most, but for those interested in top level fitness, and competitive drive, this is a very good place to start. His emphasis on what people could and should be, as opposed to what we have accepted as "normal aging" is important stuff.

Complex, but done well
