When the distinguished Mr. Justice Stafford dies of opium poisoning, his shocking demise resurrects one of the most sensational cases ever to inflame England: the murder five years before of Kingsley Blaine, whose body was found crucified in Farriers Lane. Amid the public hysteria for revenge, the police had arrested a Jewish actor who was soon condemned to hang.

Police Inspector Thomas Pitt, investigating Stafford's death, is drawn into the Farriers Lane murder as well, for it appears that Stafford may have been about to reopen the case. Pitt receives curiously little help from his colleagues on the force, but his wife, Charlotte, gleans from her social engagements startling insights into both cases. And slowly both Thomas and Charlotte begin to reach for the same sinister and deeply dangerous truth.

Very good read. I was hooked to the very end. The narration was excellent. Time well spent.

Layer upon layer of plot and character building.

Wow another great mystery that had me stumped A few red herrings and very interesting characters

Am really happy for Pitts boss who will find his happy ever after but interested to see how Pitt handles the new job if he takes it

I miss Davinia as the narrator but the new one is fine. I just speed up the narration a little to 1.1

Folk have made great comments on the story already, so I just wanted to address the narrator for folk like me, who loved Davina Porter’s work and were rather shocked by the beginning of this book. The comments about her being slow are fair. So painfully so for me, that I had to stop. But I noticed that she narrated a lot of these books, so moved onto another one to see if she improved. She did! I loved her, thought she did a brilliant job, is now a favourite, so I came back to this story. The beginning *is* slow and some parts later, but she did get better and for most of it, it wasn’t enough to be distracted. She is a talented voice performer and does get up to speed.

love Anne Perry but this narrator puts me to sleep. She speaks very slowly and the different characters are not very distinct.

Love Anne Perry
