Publisher's summary

When the distinguished Mr. Justice Stafford dies of opium poisoning, his shocking demise resurrects one of the most sensational cases ever to inflame England: the murder five years before of Kingsley Blaine, whose body was found crucified in Farriers Lane. Amid the public hysteria for revenge, the police had arrested a Jewish actor who was soon condemned to hang.

Police Inspector Thomas Pitt, investigating Stafford's death, is drawn into the Farriers Lane murder as well, for it appears that Stafford may have been about to reopen the case. Pitt receives curiously little help from his colleagues on the force, but his wife, Charlotte, gleans from her social engagements startling insights into both cases. And slowly both Thomas and Charlotte begin to reach for the same sinister and deeply dangerous truth.

Returning if I still can

The narration is so bad I couldn’t even finish chapter 1 while only half listening.

AWFUL Reading

I have loved every book in this series. Until Now. The new narrator is so awful I could not get through the first 5 minutes and immediately returned the book. Davina Porter’s voice and attitude IS Charlotte Pitt’s. Please, please bring her back!

The narration was so incredibly boring.

Don't get me wrong I'm a huge fan of the series I've loved it these books and I've listened to them many times up until this point. When they switched off from Davina Porter to this lady I thought I'd give it a try because I really want to get through the series because I've listened to the first set of books with Davina so many times. This lady.....Her voice just is not it. She's so slow when she talks and her characters are so hard to differentiate. It's almost grating on the ears how much her characters all blend together. If it wasn't for the author literally telling us who was talking I would never know. She adds absolutely no personality or depth to any of the characters. She has a slight accent to all the characters that doesn't sound right to my ears. I think after this book I'm going to have to go back to reading them because I can't stand the way she narrates them. I tried really hard to make it through this book but it's so incredibly boring when she reads it. But also on that topic again I love the series but as it's gone along it's gotten, I don't know how to say it but it lacks something of its original fun, or spice that used to be there it's kind of gone out. And it's weird because I can go back and relisten to all the original first ones and I still love them but these ones are just...lacking in something. It's hard to say.

I have read every Anne Perry book at least 3 times each and have listened to each audiobook as well. Obviously, I have enjoyed y

Oops! I have listened to each audiobook several times as well. Somehow this one escaped me. Unfortunately, I wish it remained that way. The narrator, Jenny Sterling sounded like she was drunk and underwater while reading out loud. I have to admit that I am partial to Davina Porter’s wonderful versions, so that make make me judge this narrator more harshly than neededz I will listen to the entire book in the hope that I prove myself wrong!!

Where's Davina Porter?!?!?!

The book is good, as always. But the narrator has a sonorous style. I kept falling asleep.

Poor narration, decent story

The story line is the same from the rest of the series. However, the narration was quite a disappointment. Slow and tedious. I miss the original narrator used on all previous books.

Bad Narration for this Genre

20 books, and I'll have to stop here at 13. When changing narrators, do you not interview for their interest in the characters? Or for their ability to differentiate between one character and another? Not everyone is dead pan, nor every character without inflection, and not all in the story are dead; but you wouldn't know it here. Since this narrator is kept through the remainder of the series; I'll stop buying here, at the disappointed-13. Where's Davina Porter?

Good story, poor narration

I love the Pitt mysteries, and this was another intriguing story; but, the narrator was a distraction. The slow cadence made it difficult to listen without your mind wandering. I’m disappointed to see that so many of the upcoming books in the series have the same narrator.

Great story

This was a very compelling story line. Narrator drove me nuts, I miss Davina Porter!, but once I upped the Audible listening speed to 1.6 thanks to other reviewers, it was quite an enjoyable listen.
