Episode 8: The Grange War

By: The HISTORY® Channel, Misher Films, SMAC Entertainment
Narrated by: Michael Strahan, Kate Mara
  • Summary

  • Not satisfied to control the fate of Red Grange, the greatest player in the game, C.C. “Cash and Carry” Pyle decided to form his own rival league to take on the NFL directly. He called it the AFL and poached enough players and coaches in a matter of months to challenge Carr, Halas and Mara at their own game. But with the two sides fighting on the field and against each other, it was unclear if either league would survive this deadly game of chicken.

Excellent

An intriguing story well told. Kate Mara was excellent. The contribution of the constellation of other stakeholders in the sport as well as the historians and sports figures makes this a must listen.

Understanding The Love of Football

I have never been a football fan and don’t even know the rules but I love history. So I downloaded the podcast to learn the history of a game I don’t understand. The content was thorough. I enjoyed the set up as a story interlaced with comments from professionals.. And what made it really interesting for me to listen to was the voices of the narrators, All were excellent.

Loved it! Don’t let the NY bias keep you from listening.

As a lifelong Bears’ fan and someone who grew up playing and watching football, I learned a lot about people whose names I’ve previously only heard in passing. Despite Kate Mara’s and Michael Strahan’s obvious and understandable allegiance to the Giants (teaser alert) and the Steelers, this is incredibly well-researched and produced story. Anyone who truly enjoys and can’t get enough of the NFL will love this - and while the story has its share of controversy, it’s so much better than the typical Sunday frustration of watching the video proof that the refs just botched another call that stole a potential win from your team! Listen, learn and enjoy.

More Gridiron History

I have really enjoyed and appreciated all of the historical details in this podcast surrounding the beginning of national football. My dad started playing football in Steubenville, Ohio in the 1940s. He frequently talked about the Canton Bulldogs and their dominance in Ohio. His eyes would light up when describing the high school and college games that he played in over his career. I can not wait for Season 2 to drop. Thank you for a great listen.

Sometimes less is more

I love the topic but I couldn’t tell if many of the player quotes were archived interviews or recorded intentionally for this series. It’s a little heavily produced with the sound effects too. I would really just prefer the great story without all the bells and whistles.

Enjoyed

I enjoyed the podcast and looking forward to more seasons. I did read other reviews that didn’t find it favorable because they felt facts were incorrect. I would be curious to hear what those facts are.
